Faktum/Nexus "String" Kitchen

Faktum/Nexus

Materials: Faktum/Nexus Kitchen

Description: I built a nice 'String' kitchen using Ikea Faktum kitchen cabinets with Nexus brown doors/fronts/cover panels and "String" side panels.
"String-shelf" is a Swedish popular shelf from the 1950s...

My idea was to create a kitchen that felt more like a piece of furniture since we lived in a really small apartment and the living room was the same room.. So from there I used the Faktum/Nexus kitchen cabinets and complemented with the string side panels.

What I realized in my planning was that it (in Sweden and with my budget) was impossible to find cabinet doors in wood, which was the same as the countertop... It's strange that cabinet sides and doors in the kitchen always has a contrasting top, while a sideboard often has the same...

Because of that I used cover panels for the countertop, strengthened it underneath with Nexus doors.

The result was very good, also added Perfekt Rounded deco strip/moulding against the wall, inside the countertop to get a small protrusion of the countertop .. I painted the countertop once more to make it more impact resistant.

Then I realized that there is also the same problem to find shelves in the same material as the cabinet doors, so the cover panels came in use again, with reinforcement against the wall in the center rear.

We were very pleased with the result, a vibrant personal kitchen!

  3. This is fantastic. I always thought that a kitchen should look like furniture instead of, well, just kitchen cabinets. So where's the refrigerator?

  6. ah... a genuine 'Douwe Egberts' coffee machine.... you sure this is Sweden and not Holland ?

lovely kitchem, feels very homely... but let us know after some time how the coverpanels /worktop work out.... is it strong enough? don't they wear out easily ?

  11. Hello and thanks for all the nice comments!
I have never posted any of my projects here or in other forums, so this was really fun ..
To find the "String sides" see www.string.se.

The refrigerator is in base level, "FROSTY 2-drawer fridge", located to the left of the stove To the right of the sink is the dishwasher and my thought was to have the freezer in between. Chose to have a standard base cabinet there instead and put the freezer in a closet in the hall. We have quite a lot of cookware and needed spaces ..

We have just moved from the apartment but the countertop did well this past year. One would certainly have been able to paint the countertop several times to protect it more, but it has nevertheless done well!

  12. Hello! Thanks for your post, very inspiring. Does string sells the fixations appart? If not, which kind of fixation did you use to fix the cabinets and shelves?

  13. Yes, String sells the fixation appart. I was a bit stingy and bought simple fittings to the shelves at the hardware store and paint them black.
The cabinets I mounted to the wall, so the ends are just for show there. // Elina

  15. This is so brilliant. We had our kitchen and shed converted and updated a couple of years ago. We managed to get a vintage string unit sent from Germany to go in the new garden room and I didn't want a 'kitcheny' look either. We used the same nexus top units from Ikea and made a fridge freezer surround as we din't want that totally built in new look. As we like MCM we wanted the kitchen diner to reflect this and feel like it had been put in 50 years ago. I love the way it's turned out but had I seen this first I would have definitely taken some of your ideas. Isn't it a shame that teak kitchens are hard to come by. All that I find were discontinued or found in Australia! Thank Goodness for Ikea.

Thank you for sharing this. Do you miss your kitchen now that you've moved and would you do it again?

  16. The time is called Flip wall clock, Fartech.

I would definitely make a similar kitchen again!
If you have a small apartment, you can also do it in white to make it a little neater.

We have now moved to a townhouse from the 50's and I almost burst because of all the ideas I have for renovations and furnishings ...
I really like your home "Flutterbymama"!
