Materials: IKEA Lagan countertop
Description: I needed to improve my living room work place so I made a standing desk out of an IKEA Lagan countertop that I cut to the right size. The problem was that I needed room for four of my external hard drives and I did not want them to take any space on the desk and there weren't much other space I could use either. I did, however, have some space beneath the standing desk so I decided to hang them on the back of another IKEA board under the desk.
It turned out just the way I wanted.

ReplyDeleteI have been pondering doing something like this with the big pc alter that is in our living room (because the tv is regularly patched into it, and we have a small home). This solves the issue of hiding wires while simultaneously keeping them accessible.
ReplyDeleteYes, white power cord and white USB cables would definitely look better. I have tried to find white USB cables with no luck.
ReplyDeleteAnonymous, the binders are originally rubber straps made for canvas tops to trailers. They can be bought separately.
A little bit of white duct tape around the cords would do the trick.
DeleteA small tip, totally off-topic from the hack. But I 'used' to own an ex-harddrive like one of those, same as a friend of mine. They both crashed within half a year .. resulting in us both losing almost all of the data on it. (I still had dvd backups)

Nice, but a few things:
ReplyDelete1) I would have moved the unit to the left, so it would be above the power outlet, i cant see any reason to not have it there.
2) Go and buy some cable channels (or what its called in English, so you hide the cables going down from the monitor.
3) Unless those external drives are masssive in storage, i would replace them with 1 or two large capasity units, they are dirt cheap.

That wiring is a bit of a mess. There are some very inexpensive "stackable" HD enclosures or you could just use a Network Attached Storage unit to accept 2-4 drives if you have them permanently mounted.
ReplyDeleteI would also try to clean up the power cabling for the lamp and your power surge connector so they run the same route, hidden with a cable channel.
If you installed a LACK floating shelf above the monitor, you could install a Dioder LED strip and get rid of the lamp, and it frees up space.
You could also use the top of the LACK shelf to store the HD's, stationary etc.
Absolutely love this and am thinking of nicking the idea of hiding stuff, but with the Laiva desk.
ReplyDeleteWhat have you got the MacBook standing in? I was considering some Kvissle book-ends, but they wouldn't fit the edge of the Laiva.

ReplyDeleteHey everyone, You can paint cords with latex paint. Very useful when they must cross a wall - I always paint them to match & they pretty much disappear.

ReplyDeleteWondering the same thing as csainthi - how is the cover attached? Could you show a pic of the underside of the shelf, or describe? Also, what size did you cut the Langan countertop to -- can you give dimensions? Are the wall mounting brackets also IKEA? Really like this and would like to replicate.
