Kickstarter: Ikea Expedit hack with record covers
Some thing a little different today. This is a kickstarter project from Shane. I had no idea what a kickstarter project was until now. In a nutshell, it's a website for people to birth an idea and find financial backers for their project. Shane's project is on the Expedit with aluminum door frames that allow record covers to be slotted in. Nice. Well, his email landed in my spam box some time ago and would have been lost if my itchy fingers did not happen to check it. (Yes, I do occasionally as some hacks/emails do land there). There are 6 days lefts for Shane to get his backers. I do not know Shane personally nor am I involved with this project in anyway. Just wanted to pass this along and give you the opportunity to support it, if you like the project. ~ Jules
Here's the email from Shane:
My name is Shane Keaney, I've got an Ikea hack kickstarter project you guys might dig. It's a simple frame that fits the Expedit shelves from Ikea, and allows for a Record cover to slide in, those shelves are used by a lot of people, like myself, to store records.
Thank you for your time!

that looks great!
ReplyDeletewere can i buy record covers?
That is so cool. I wish I collected Records and had a large Expedit unit to put them in!
ReplyDeleteThat's just what I did yesterday. Bought one of these things for my record collection. It's pretty sweet and even fits my large "collector" editions that come in bigger packaging.
DeleteYou buy the record frames at Micheals, JoAnn fabric & crafts.
ReplyDeleteThat's really cool. But I can't believe you're using a record as rare as Mezzanine as a decoration (just the vinyl nerd in me).

ReplyDeleteIndie Record stores, Thrift stores, ebay, amazon, craiglist, etc...

No, this is entirely different. The frames you are talking about are to hang on the walls. These are going to be used as doors for the expedit slots, while at the same time allowing you to slide a record sleeve/cover into it for display.

It's called Photoshop. ;)
This is a great idea and I really hope Shane can get the funding!

ReplyDeleteHi IKEA hackers / Jules. Thanks so much for posting my project. I was wondering where all the new backers were coming from! And yesterday happened to be by my birthday, so thanks for the good timing. :)

You're asking 32 dollars or more per frame?!?!? That's insane. I'm surprised you've sold any at all.
ReplyDeleteMore power to you.

Love the idea, but the pricing is a bit steep for 16 frames...
ReplyDeleteThis is such a great idea that I sent this link to a client who has more records than I have ever seen in my life! Thanks for posting!
ReplyDeleteI think I saw some kind of the same idea on the other Ikea web-page. I don't know whether they are stealing our ideas, but it's not good! We shell punish them for doing so, haha
