EXPEDIT reshuffled

Materials: 1 large IKEA EXPEDIT

Description:
Well it all seemed quite simple, but in the end took a week to make :-)

1. Drill additional holes
In my design some of the vertical (short) elements are in their original place, some aren’t, you’ll need to drill holes for those and of those holes some are not all the way through the horizontal elements so take care, you’ll end up with less holes you’ll have to cover circular adhesive foil cutouts can be bought or homemade

2. Assemble the shelf, using the original wooden pins, I cut them in half for the T joints.

3. In case you want to risk hanging the shelf you’ll need 4 large and sturdy L shape consoles. I found some with a U cross section, this way the 4 bottom vertical elements did fit into them and made them almost invisible. But I also had to make cuts in the back side of the bottom most horizontal element to be able to get it close to the wall.

4. Of course you’ll need to use the supplied top fixings (the more the better)

Oh and it would look way better on a colored wall and rotated 90°

Love it! Hanging furniture gives a cleaner and modern touch!!!

I like the rotation as it is (long shelves on the horizontal). Not sure why, maybe because the room is more horizontal than vertical. You could paint or wallpaper the back of the shelves (aka wall) if you didn’t want to paint the whole wall, and the shelves would really pop then. Maybe use some colored plastic instead of paint (like an IKEA placemat?).

Anyway, I think it looks great as it is.

I love the idea and I would like to do sth like that on one of the walls (smaller scale). I have an intercom in the middle of the wall in the living room, it is unpractical, but with this idea i can fit it in one of the shelves/openings and by doing so use the space efficiently.

Ah! I was so tired of Expedit, but you really made it look good! For the first time I can imagine myself bying one again! It’s the best shelf for vinyl records! Great work!

Can you clarify more on how you mounted? I’m not sure I understand how you did it. I am planning on hanging an expedit myself and was planning on using a different method, but this looks way better. Also, are you concerned about the laminate surface peeling off due to weight?

I agree with the comment up above – it looks better just as it is, with the primary shelves being horizontal, probably because the ceiling isn’t very high in that room.

And I also agree that the wall doesn’t need to be colored, but that if you want color, placing colored inserts at the back of some of the shelves might work nicely. Don’t think I’d paint the actual unit, though. I’d probably use something I could remove, or even change around depending on the season.

    I am really impressed!

  8. The best hack for a long time…really impressed and i get so inspirered. Thanks!

I wouldnt paint o wallpaper the back wall, I’d use some different color accesories/boxes like season-themed, so you can change the whole color/style when you want.

    Love it anyway ;)

The frame of expedit is made of very thin wood and is hollow except some cardboard, so how did you get the dowel holes sturdy enough?

what software did u use for rendering
    ?

    That is unbelievably cool…

In your opinion can I put an aquarium on a 2×4 expedit without assemble the vertical pieces? at least in 2 of 4 shelves…it’ll bear the weight?

  14. Anonymous says:

Giselle, I don’t think that’s the best idea. Expedit is only laminated carton. ;)

  15. Looks great – but how did you fill in the original unsed holes in the horizontal boards?
I’m doing something similar on a high-gloss white expedit.
    Thanks!

Usefull.. I have actually wall hung a smaller one of these 4×4 . I hung it from the top using 4x20kg L brackets.. However seeing this I wish I had used a bottom support method.. As my shelf is sagging under weight. Wish I knew this site existed before I attempted my own hack :)

    Hi Martin,

may I ask you where did you buy those L shape consoles? We also would like to hang 5×5 expedit on the wall. And I am from Slovakia, so I have the same options as you (I mean shops, etc…) :-)

I love this idea, thanks for sharing. And I love it that way round, too. I’m hoping to do mine (a 4×4) to give me shelf space for the hi-fi units (being an old-fashioned sort, with a record player and everything!).

    I love it!!!
Me too I need to know where to get those L shaped consoles, everytime I go to a store, they have no idea what I’m talking about, even with the picture.
    any idea?
