Materials: BRODER Shelving System, LACK Wall Shelves
Description: My apartment complex had strict rules of putting holes in the wall, yet I needed a way to mount my new TV. I came up with a way to create a floor-to-ceiling entertainment center without putting a single hole in the wall, ceiling, or floor.
I started with two BRODER posts with the height extension post and foot attachment on each foot. These were plumbed and then connected using two BRODER clothes rails.
Then I had a piece of plywood cut at my local home improvement store to a size that would fit in between the posts. I stained it black, and then drilled holes to use U-Bolts to mount the plywood to the clothes rails. The mount for the TV is bolted to the piece of plywood.
Here's a closeup of how the plywood mounts to the clothes rails, and the TV mount is bolted to the plywood.
I had a couple leftover LACK wall shelves from another room renovation and decided they would be perfect for long shelves across the front. I just used the regular BRODER shelf mounts and screwed them to the underside of the LACK shelves.
All the components fit on the shelf and I zip-tied the cables to run up the back of the posts and then to the TV. The basket holds the surge protector, and cable splitters. The mount is strong enough to allow me to swivel the TV in either direction for watching on the balcony or in the kitchen!

ReplyDeleteSo is it just braced against the ceiling? Without the L-feet, what stopping it all toppling forward?!
ReplyDeleteI love this look!! But do have the same question as I have a two year old in the house.. Always concerned about heavy things coming down on this curious little dude... or me as far as that goes... Thanks for sharing...
ReplyDeleteNice! I agree with the previous comments concerning kids. This hack is awesome if you don't have kids but too dangerous if you do. I can totally see my 2 kids trying to climb this thing and having it topple.

ReplyDeleteThis is certainly a neat idea, though I'd also be pretty afraid of the thing suddenly coming loose (thermal contraction of metal, perhaps?) and destroying all my electronics in one go.
ReplyDeleteLooking at the BRODER line, it looks like one could do something similar with the L foot version. for a bit more stability.
Definitely an interesting idea though!
if your ceiling is stippled, you can fix the screw holes easily and invisibly...make sure to use ceiling anchors if there is no stud. i agree with the others...love this hack, but for the sake of safety, do yourself a favor and find a way to make this more stable!

This is very clean, but you should either bolt the top to the ceiling or using L-foot at the bottom. Spring + fiction sure not enough. You'll have additional brace with each L-foot you buy which design to prevent from moving sideways. The fiction will give out suddenly you may not notice anything before it start to fall.
ReplyDeleteHow big is your TV? I want to do this with ours (our TV stand is ridiculous) and ours is 60". Though I'll probably have my husband bolt it to the ceiling since we have a toddler.
