Low-budget bedside lamp

Materials: RATIONELL VARIERA, lamp socket, bulb, plastic folder, cutter

Description: Simple and cheap DIY project. Based on IKEA RATIONELL VARIERA (1,49€), a lamp socket (5€ – if not found in the basement) and a plastic folder (0,70€). To install the socket there’s only a simple cutter needed. The plastic folder covers the front (DIN A4 matches perfect, no cutting needed) to make the light smooth and the bulb invisible.

  1. Hans says:

Hm. Looks good but plastics + heat ≠ good (not good)

the smell of melting or burning plastics isnt very healthy but this hack is still possible if you replace the normal bulb with an LED that doesn’t produce heat…

  2. Rainer says:

I understand your concern but the heat is really no problem. You need to run it for a a lot of hours to make it become really hot. There is enough distance between the bulb (It is a small one) and the plastic, so it would never melt…

  3. Anonymous says:

you could always use an energy saving bulb for less heat right?

I think the light “pattern” looks great in a dark room, but I’m not sure I could look at this thing and not think “oh, that’s the cheap plastic bag dispenser”… instant de-glamourisation.

Brilliant. This is what it’s all about.

  7. Annette says:

That’s a very nice idea. I’m going to use your idea, but instead of a light bulb, I’ll put an Osram Dot-it LED lamp, as Hans suggested. I’ve got one left, thanks for this lovely idea of yours.

  8. Rainer says:

But I have to say it is really a lot brighter in reality. The photo made the high contrast.
