Expedit into Entertainment Unit

Materials: Expedit 5×1, Capita Legs *8

Description: A relatively simple hack, basically we were looking around for a long entertainment unit but on a budget. Everything we found was either too gaudy or just really expensive. The idea was to get an Expedit shelving unit and turn it sideways and put some feet on it to raise it off the carpet.

I put together the Drawers and Doors you can purchase separately for the unit, then put the main Expedit together.

Screwed in 8 Capita legs (from the kitchen section as these are for pantries etc) on the bottom and turned it up the right way.

The hole is left in the middle for consoles and the network connected TV/movie viewing device so the remotes all work.

Very simple and i think looks better than any of the other options we could find out there.

While I like what you have done, I feel the need to point out an issue with every single IKEA item when it comes to using them for entertainment stands: nothing is deep enough. My receiver is 21″ deep. Then I have cords coming out the back of that. So I need at least 23″ from front to back. The deepest I have seen is 22″. I am *this* close to hacking a coffee table into an entertainment unit and just dealing with it being 4 feet deep!

I have used a PAX – they used to be available 1m high, and I just put my stereo in there, and the TV (I drilled holes in the back, the TV is either switched off or the doors are open because I’m watching TV, so there is no heat problem). Nice side effect: I don’t see the stuff when I’m not using it…. So I can only recommend the wardrobe section!

Adding a piece of butcher block counter top from the kitchen section would really take this up one notch.

@anonymous: Ikea does have a couple 23in deep tv stands: http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/S59850471/

With other options in the besta line if you don’t mind a little hacking.

@josea: I don’t understand how the Tobo is 23″ deep. The version that is just the stand unit without the tv panel is only 19 3/4″. I don’t know why they would have a deeper one that only comes with the tv panel backing, which I wouldn’t need anyways. If it really is that deep, then it would be perfect. I will have to get out to my local store to check it out.

I think once you add in the ikea drawers/doors and capita legs, the price adds up a lot. If I added it up correctly and it’s something like $220 on the US site.

That tends to compete with ready built tv stands that ikea already offers. A solid wood hemnes tv stand runs $225.

    nice idea though.

Hemnes in Aus is close to $400 and only allows for tvs up to 37″, This is a fantastic idea to circumvent some of the ugly ass tv cabinets out there.

I did the same thing you did but with glossy grey doors. I used a few led lights too. I didn’t used capita legs so my pet rabbit can’t go under the unit ;) Expedit was perfect for me as it is not too long, cheap, heavily customizable, and is perfect to store my vinyl LP’s ;)

    Nice hack !

    Great looking unit!

But the inserts used in the configuration makes this very expensive.

In Australia, the inserts alone would cost
    (50 * 2) + (25 * 4) = 200$

Sometimes it’s not about the price, but getting exactly what you want.
    I think it looks great
