Another Expedit Standing Desk with CDs as risers
Materials: Expedit Book Case, Vika Desktop, CDs
Description: After reading all about the benefits of a standing desk, I had been wanting to build one for my home office for some time. So after seeing this post on Ikea Hackers, I came up with a plan to use an Expedit book case and a Vika desk top to build a simple but attractive standing desk.
The first step was to do some research on the ergonomics of standing while working on a computer so I could get the height right for me. I use some books, paint cans, and other materials to prototype the desk I figured out the correct height I would need to work and type comfortably.
To start I turned the Expedit on it's side and attached some Ikea casters to raise the desk off the ground and make it easy to move around while I do a bigger home office remodel. To attach the desktop I used 5 inch (127 mm) bolts some PVC pipe and CDs to make the risers that sit between the Expedit and Vika desktop to get my perfect height. This was done as close as possible to the ends to ensure the Vika was attached through the solid portion of the desktop.
To finish off the desk I purchased a monitor arm to attach my monitor to ensure it was at the right height for working as well.

I like the idea of using CDs as risers. We've seen a lot of standing desks using the Capita legs but the use of CDs is brilliant. You can adjust it to the exact height you need. And if you have old CDs that you don't need anymore, it's a great way to repurpose them. ~ Jules

i don't get that standing desk stuff. Who is able to stand for more then 5 Minutes in front of the computer and work productively? Half the internet is full with this standig desk stuff...
ReplyDeleteI dunno, anon; I like the standing desk. I particularly like the adjustable height ones I've seen... being forced to sit for over 8 hours a day does terrible things for your back; I for one would be glad to have the option to stand and work for a few hours a day.
ReplyDeletethis is awesome esp the CD riser idea! Great job!
ReplyDeleteI dont have just a standing desk, I have a walking desk as well. With an IKEA table which you can rise up and down with a electric motor and a tremill underneath. I can put a stuhl or my gymnastikball on top of the treadmill or I can stand or walk. It is very good to get concentrated. ReplyDeleteI stand at my work desk all day, for eight hours. I stop like every two hours or so to sit for 10-15 minutes but I really love it. I like this a lot and I need a standing desk for home. Think I wanna try with the red EXPEDIT and VIKA, assuming the color matches.
ReplyDeleteOh this is cool! It satisfies my inner storage monster.
ReplyDeleteGreat idea and great use of old burnable CDs that we all have but don't know what to do with (I don't think you can recycle them). Congrats on being a lil green.
ReplyDeleteActually yes you can recycle CDs. I've been to recycle centers that take them. I also have a shredder to eats CDs and credit cards along with the usual paper.
DeleteI like this standing desk too, been thinking about doing this with my new home office.
Brilliant idea, I love it..
ReplyDeleteI really like this idea, and am thinking about doing it myself. What would be really cool would be some way to illuminate the CDs from the inside-out, possibly with white or blue LEDs. It would give it a cool TRON-like feeling to the desk without being obnoxious
ReplyDeleteWhat style and size Vika is that?
