Materials: Broder shelf, batten, threaded rod, clear PVC tube
Description: I need a lot of shelf space for my DVD collection and was going to go for a rather clean, "library shelf" look. When the Broder system came to my attention, I immediately fell for in. The hack is rather simple. I just screwed a piece of batten (Of course sanded down and painted just like the wooden boards) to the center of the 36.5 cm deep wooden Broder boards and the assembled the thing as usual.
To keep my DVDs from falling out, I screwed one eye screw on each side into each board and pushed a threaded rod through, which I covered with clear PVC tubing. This gives a nice effect, a bit like stainless steel and the PVC lends a good grip to them. The ends of the rods are covered with cap nuts. As my collection is sorted alphabetically, I used some magnetic letters to mark the boards.

ReplyDeleteI applaud your hack, but I just can't fathom why someone wouldn't want to digitize their collection instead of having a living room fixture take up so much space.
ReplyDeletewelcome to the 21 century - get into the digital time with dvd ripper and itunes...then you have more space left for reasonable furnitures..
ReplyDeleteWhat you could've done is flip around the brackets that hold the shelves, so they can hold your dvd's in place. Nevertheless, kudo's on having Amelie and giving me a good idea for a room devider!
ReplyDeleteSaskia, I actually thought about that, but then I woulc have had to drill extra holes into the metal for a screw, or else the brackets would just fall out.
ReplyDeleteFor anyone proposing digitizing my collection: DVD is already a digital medium, and nothing from Apple will ever exist in my household.
I like the threaded rods with the PVC covering. Where did you buy them? I think, I will adopt this idea, it looks very nice.
ReplyDeleteI bought them from a local hardware store. The threaded rods are usually near the screws section, the tubing is in the section with fountain/aquarium/pond pumps. In Germany, at least.

ReplyDeleteBecause of the German title "Die fantastische Welt der Amelie" (="The fanstic world of Amelie") "Die" ("=the") is an article and those are ignored for sorting, at least in Germany, so it is under "F".

ReplyDeleteVery useful and if install well, heavy duty. Sometimes I even stand on the lower shelf to access high stuffs. Of cause you need an engineering mind set to ensure it won't fall of when you climb. The collections of many parts are discontinued, but now I'm designing to covert a new shelf with casters below to move around.
