Tromso got flipped, turned upside-down

Materials: Tromso, philips screwdriver

Description: No longer wanting to sleep while so high, I wondered if I could flip my Tromso bed and only use the top part, but upside down. It looked possible from my initial inspection.

Note that the mattress base was in four pieces, supported by cross-members.

So to get it to a bed state:

- Flip the whole bed completely. Helped to have an extra person here.

- Remove the legs. Because they way it's built, you pretty much have to take the whole bed apart. So, do that. Put the mattress base aside.
- Screw the frame back together without the legs. Do what you want with the plastic feet / hole covers.
- Attach the four pieces of the mattress base. This will trap you inside the bed (see picture) so make sure you didn't put the escape hole against a wall.

And done. Not too hard at all. Now I have a proper bed to host the ladies with some storage underneath. It can easily be bed-skirted if you don't like the metal bars look. Also, I can imagine using two of the legs and some fabric to create a headboard without too much trouble.

See more of the upside down Tromso bed.

  1. Neat!

All of my cats and at least one of my dogs would hide in there and sleep underneath it every single night. Hee. :)

  2. Next task: fashion a door for that convenient dog crate you just built.

  5. That is hilarious! I did the exact same thing with mine putting the little opening towards the wall. I never thought to post it on here and now I am sad you posted it first LOL. I was actually thinking of using some Ikea bed slats I have left over to attach over the metal to see if I can give it a more organic instead of metal look

  6. Nice work! I did this a few years ago in a tiny bedroom in college. I reinstalled the 4 legs for a pretty sweet 4-poster twin bed.

  8. My boys would love that! Great for kids....a bit impractical for adults though, unless you don't ever plan on vacuuming under there (then the ladies won't be so impressed).

  13. I did this too a couple years back, didn't find this page till today.

I lived in a very small high ceiling room where i could stand under
and on top of my bed and still have room over my head.
When i moved my ceilings were NOT so high anymore
so instead of getting a new bed, i turned my tromso over...
i kept the legs on, it makes a nice canopy bed like that.
I have the opening by the the foot end of the bed
    and use it for storage...
