Materials: Varde free standing cabinet
Description:
1) Took the Varde cabinet (great organizer, looks tacky from the back).
2) Added a shoe organizer at the end (so when we come into the kitchen from the outside we leave boots at the door, and grab slippers from the shoe organizer)
3) Covered the whole thing in 1/4 ply and 1 x 3 MDF trim
4) Painted
5) Installed new Ikea wood counter on top (removing worn out thinner one that came with the unit)

I like the idea, although the shoe rack seems a little out of place in a kitchen! If I did the same, I'd probably store jars of spices/etc :)

ReplyDeleteyeah, shoes in the kitchen cabinets seems a little odd to me. Shoes can be dirty and stinky. I'd be much more inclined to stash utensils & spices in there, and have a separate spot by the door for shoes. To each his own, i guess.

I like how you added a thicker counter top and the finish work. It looks very high end. I don't know about shoes and food sharing the same space but you've showed where there's a will there's a way! Live and let live!

ReplyDeleteMy, my, my. I didn't know that others' shoes were so stinky! I love what you've done, much more neatly than I've done it myself. My kitchen is also my mudroom, and I have a smaller set-up similar to this. I have no problem with smell, nor any qualms about shoe germs.

As the proud poster of this hack which generated such social controversy, let me say I now see it seems totally bizarre to put your shoes in our kitchen island -- without seeing the layout of the house. 150 years old, and no closets on the first floor! So 3 feet from this island is the entry and the piles of coats, hats, backpacks, and yes shoes! All the moms who come over ogle at the shoe rack there, which must say something about what it means to be a mom! If someone can come up with a hack to make kids put shoes away, let me know. Until then, I'll be sure to put wine in the cubbies if I ever sell the house!
