Kitchen Island Beauty

Materials: Varde free standing cabinet

Description:
1) Took the Varde cabinet (great organizer, looks tacky from the back).
2) Added a shoe organizer at the end (so when we come into the kitchen from the outside we leave boots at the door, and grab slippers from the shoe organizer)
3) Covered the whole thing in 1/4 ply and 1 x 3 MDF trim
4) Painted
5) Installed new Ikea wood counter on top (removing worn out thinner one that came with the unit)

  1. I like the idea, although the shoe rack seems a little out of place in a kitchen! If I did the same, I'd probably store jars of spices/etc :)

  2. Good idea ! But you have shoes in your kitchen ... I hope your kids don't play rugby!

  3. yeah, shoes in the kitchen cabinets seems a little odd to me. Shoes can be dirty and stinky. I'd be much more inclined to stash utensils & spices in there, and have a separate spot by the door for shoes. To each his own, i guess.

  7. No, I am not gonna comment on your shoes. Your kitchen, your choice! :-) I like it.

Did remind me of an earlier hack ->

  8. I like how you added a thicker counter top and the finish work. It looks very high end. I don't know about shoes and food sharing the same space but you've showed where there's a will there's a way! Live and let live!

  9. delicious, the smell of stinky shoes next to my dinner. I am starving!

  10. The rack would also be perfect for wine :-)

  11. My, my, my. I didn't know that others' shoes were so stinky! I love what you've done, much more neatly than I've done it myself. My kitchen is also my mudroom, and I have a smaller set-up similar to this. I have no problem with smell, nor any qualms about shoe germs.
Shame on the above posters for being so negative toward a great hack. I especially love the mdf trim to give it such a finished look. Congrats!

  13. Agreed with the above. How about we comment on the hack itself - which is awesome! - and not what she chooses to store in it. Heaven forbid we all be subjected to what others think of our 'at home' habits! To each his own! Geez!

  14. Wow! As the proud poster of this hack which generated such social controversy, let me say I now see it seems totally bizarre to put your shoes in our kitchen island -- without seeing the layout of the house. 150 years old, and no closets on the first floor! So 3 feet from this island is the entry and the piles of coats, hats, backpacks, and yes shoes! All the moms who come over ogle at the shoe rack there, which must say something about what it means to be a mom! If someone can come up with a hack to make kids put shoes away, let me know. Until then, I'll be sure to put wine in the cubbies if I ever sell the house!

    1. Solves some issues with the clutter of shoes in a very tasteful way. Really like it.
