Pimp my Poang

Materials: Poang, fabric, walnut finish

Description:
I had an IKEA Poang chair that I hated.  Normally the Poang doesn't bother me, but this one originally had a red glossy wood finish with a dark green seat.  yuck!  I wish I had taken photos of it before changing it because it was absolutely hideous and I can't find this combination in google images.  I  sanded the entire thing, gave it a walnut finish and changed the entire mid section so that the fabric supports your weight.  The cost of redoing the chair was surprisingly low since I used wood from the chair.  I just bought the thick fabric and screws that hold it on, which only cost about 15 dollars. The orange scented wax I used cost more than that!

  1. How's the comfort of the chair? Looks like the top bar might stick into your back when you sit down...

  6. how did you determine how long to cut the fabric for the sling seat, and what is the length of the fabric, btw? like others, i'm curious as to how comfortable this is....if you were to make another one, would you make the sling seat the same length, or longer? shorter?

i've never been a fan of the poang, but i love what you've done with this one, thanks for sharing it here!

  8. This is really creative - I love it! Great re-imagining of an Ikea classic. One thing I do not like about the Poang is the bulk it projects into a smaller space, especially with the footstool. This is a great way to sort of put it on a diet visually and functionally in the room.

I've never been a fan of the Poäng design - your hack is so much better!

  10. Wow, really great improvement on the chair! It was hideous before and you've made it cool.

I do want to know about the art also. Is it a print/painting/original?

    :)

  13. Really impressive! I'd like to know if you used sand/finishing/abrasive paper to undo the old wood color of the poang? and if so what grain(s) did you use so as not to damage wooden surface?
