Kura bed transformed to kingsize bed with cosy cave

Materials: Kura bed

Description: My son and I live on very little space, so I wanted to make a bed for both of us that didn’t take up too much space.

I bought a Kura bed, painted it white and removed one of the panels of the bed in order to fit an 140×200 cm mattress instead of the original 90×200 cm. The new mattress is much wider than the original, so I had to make new bed rails – I painted them blue. Below I put several bookshelves for my son’s toys, as well as a lamp and glowing stars under the bed, for him to watch when going to sleep.

I painted the end of the bed with magnetic paint and on top of that paint to use chalk on. I also made curtains from Ikea fabric, so he can close them and have a nice little “cave” in there!

Now I sleep on top, and my son underneath – as a benefit all his toys fit under the bed, so I saved so much space!

I think this is a lovely hack and amazing space saver. However, I am concerned that the Kura frame was not designed to hold the weight of a mattress that is 50% larger and heavier. I would be scared that it would collapse on my child. Did you re-inforce the structure?

I hope you added some additional support for the larger bed and your adult weight!!

  3. Liv says:

I did :) The bookcases under the bed hold the weight, and I also put two more in there for additional safety, one in each end of the bed :)

I don’t quite get how the larger mattress is supported – did you widen the entire frame or does it hang off one side? It’s hard to tell from the photos.

Personally, I would’ve hacked a STORA loft bed ( http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/80160867 ) and made it lower (cut the legs just below the cross braces).

The idea is fantastic, I know what it’s like living with limited space and this is a great idea to combat that :)

I know this is an older post, but I have the same question as the last commenter, I just can’t figure out how the larger king mattress is supported. I see that the bed slats look longer, so did you buy king slats? I LOVE the idea, I’m just sort of confused.

It is suppeorted in two ways:

In one side, it rest on top of the bookcases (in the last picture you can se a white box on top of the bookshelfe, that is a white shoebox hiden a wooden block – there are four of them). And I build five extra “legs”, one in each corner and one on the long side, to support it. The legs is made of Wooden planks that is inserted with screws in the buttom of the mattres (that is in a wooden frame)and goes all the way down to the floor, supporten the weight of the mattres.

  7. Absolutely FABULOUS hack!!!

Wow, sooooo cool! I love the idea of putting the bookshelf in there, the curtains and the magnetic paint. I just bought a kura bed today for my 2 year old and this is definitely something I’ll adapt! Thank you!

  9. This Kura bed is amazing. It is fit to the bedroom of my kids. It simple but elegant. I want to replace their bed as soon as possible because it is already damage. When I read your blog I got an idea to buy a new one. I’m sure my kids happy if I bought a new bed for them. Thank you for your blog. it is very helpful. Keep it up.
