Secret Passage and Fort for Kids Using Expedit Bookcase and Desk
Materials: Expedit
Description: I recently redid my little boy's room. Like everyone, we didn't want to spend a lot of money, yet wanted something that would last into his teenage years.
We decided to purchase the Expedit bookcase and desk since they would grow with him. When he's an adolescent, he'll actually be able to use the desk as a desk, but while he's a toddler, the bookcase serves as a
toy/book organizer as well as a secret passage into his fort which is actually the area under the desk.
To create the fort, I took a shower curtain rod and a sheet to make the curtain that hangs under the desk. We added a rope light for a few bucks underneath and our little man loves it.

I sure hope that the Expedit is bolted to the wall or secured in some other way - they can be quite heavy and this one just looks like he could pull it down on himself when crawling through! (Or he could eventually try climbing it, like a ladder, which is surely what I would have done as a kid.) Fun idea, though - just worried about your little guy's safety! ;)
ReplyDeleteSo cool!(First poster- I amagine these folks are exercising the same level of caution as any responsible parent who values the life of their children - i.e. supervised play). Very practical and seriously play-worthy. Nice work.

Absolutely LOVE the look on your boys face in the third photo!
ReplyDeleteLooks like the ultimate conqueror.
I just set up this combination and I remember the instructions are to place the bookshelf against the wall for safety reasons. I worry that this heavy shelf could unhinge. keep in mind that without the wall, the other side of the table bears a lot of wear and weigth with movement of the shelf. i looks great but i'd rather be safe than sorry and move the setup around.
ReplyDeleteIf you're worried about safety, just use the 2x2 Expedit instead of the 2x4...
