Ribba Hot Wheels Display Case

Materials: Ribba 20×20 shadow box frame and illustration board

Description: As an avid Hot Wheels collector I’ve spent years looking for the perfect way to display my collection. Lightning struck once I discovered the interior depth to be 3cm which is just slightly wider than the width of the average hot wheel.

I constructed a grid using black illustration board available at any art supply store, which I proceeded to cut in interlocking strips eliminating the need for any glue. 1 frame holds 50 cars (depending on allotted space per cell).

This is an awesome idea. For people with a hobby lobby store near them about every other week they have fifty percent off there frames and shadow boxes with makes them quite inexpensive, at least compared to building them and usually you can get that craft board at some dollar stores. I just saw this today and I’m going to start a few for myself as I am an avid customizer. I have two 125 display cases full of customs and am officially out of room. As soon as have one complete I will send pics with one full of customs. Thanks for the idea nick

  2. what did you use to cut the illustration board?

    Dave from oz
I built one thats similar for the grandson he’s only 4
it holds 40 cars, the dividers and grids are
made from perspex it also has 2 perspex doors
with cars as handles,a magnetic latch type clip
(from the likes of a cupboard door)painted in 2 pack
black with brass hinges and a brass strip to cover the
    door joint.
I am going to make him some more as his collection
is getting out of control now he has over 200 cars
I will proably set it up for each year with the posters
in the cases and as he gets the cars can place them in the
correct places to help him keep track of buying and too see whats missing.

Thanks a million for sharing. I just can’t bring myself to spend $500 – $600 to display my collection with cases that don’t go with anything I own.

my husband won’t take his out of the boxes they came in. otherwise I would make this in a second.

This is a neat idea! I agree that some decorative backing would be nice, like black and white racing-style checkerboard. I think I will design something similar to display my PEZ dispensers collection.

Hi, what a fantastic idea. Does anyone know where you can get illustration board in the UK?

  8. Stacey says:

Awesome! Glad you had that inspiration, and made this hack and shared it with us.

  10. MG says:

It might be cool to get some car related poster to put in the back of the frame.

  11. Moontree says:

That is awesome! I’ll have to show my husband, he hunts down rare hot wheels and sells them on ebay. We have boxes full in the attic, lol.

  12. Rebecca says:

Really great! But, maybe you could paint the bak of the frame in some color?

  13. islay says:

Wow, you did a great job.

  14. Anonymous says:

Cool! Now I wish I could do the same with my collection of 1/18 models. :)

  15. Anonymous says:

Very nice. Great job. I wonder if this would work for Thomas the Tank engine figures. My son has boxes of them.

  16. Anonymous says:

Very nice. I’d replace the fibreboard backing with backpainted glass of the same thickness for a neater effect

  17. Shawn says:

Does it give anyone else fits that some cars are off center in each cell? Dear Chris, crack that puppy open and center those cars please! If the wheelbase of each hot wheel is generally the same you could even incorporate tiny pegs to block the wheels in place.

Oh yea, and it does look cool :)

  18. Sing says:

My nephew would love this! He collects Hot Wheels too.
