Lift coffee table

Materials: VIKA AMON

Description: I made a coffee table lift (# 1) using a VIKA AMON plate and a trestle (in any hardware store) which I adapted some curtain rods to make it slide (# 3 and #4). So I can transform it into a table to eat (# 2)

  1. Oh, great ! I had the same idea but without the rods. Maybe I will make this improvement.

I use a piano stand as trestle (RTX RX40, good looking and stable) with a 120x60cm Vika Amon.

  2. This is a great idea! I may have to do this one.

  3. use a longer table and get it a little higher and you've got an even more useful table. Setting 1 - coffee table. Setting 2 - Dinner table. Setting 3 - Beerpong table!

  5. That is freakin brilliant. Perfect solution for our lack of sufficient eating space when entertaining. Beer pong option is not a desire for us, so I find it seriously functional.

  6. To respond to "where to find trestle" :
in any "do-it-yourself" stores. In France we have : CASTORAMA, BRICOMARCHE, or furnitures stores like BUT, CONFORAMA, ALINEA...
    Enjoy !

  10. I am in love with this! Thank you so, so much for sharing this, this is exactly what I need.

Could you please tell me the height of the coffee table, and the size of the tabletop that you used? I'm also not sure if I understand how the trestle works, does it just snap into place at a certain height?

  11. @ Laura : The height of the coffee table is what you want it to be ! The trestle has a lowering minimum about 5 cm. The adjustment is made with guts on the wheel of the trestle crossing. The maximum height is about 1,20 m.
    Enjoy !

  12. this my dear friends - gave me exactly what i needed. already had the inspiration and the idea but just didnt know how / what to use. i was thinking of using the bottom of an ironing board. (my application is different) - BUT SAME EXACT IDEA! Thanks for sharing this ESPECIALLY to the person that suggested to search amazon for keyboard stand.

  13. you could even just attach it to an old ironing board. Might not have quite the stability unless you give it a wider stance but it's quite easy if you have one laying around.

  14. This is brilliant!

The only suggestion I have to make it look a little less DIY is to spraypaint the trestle black.

  15. We have been using this exact same idea in our last flats for about 5 years !

In fact you can get more versatility by not attaching the base to the table top.

By flipping the X base on it side (the X is now horizontal) and resting the top on the now vertical tubes it can provide for a very sturdy platform that can withstand much more weight.
My artist wife has been using this as a posing platform for her models for years now and it did support my 160 pounds from time to time...

We have used it extensively as a coffee table (in front of our sofa), as a Japanese dining table (where you sit on the floor), as a lounge table (where you sit on the sofa and comfy armchairs, one of my favorite setting ), a dining table (siting on regular standard chairs), as previously said, flipped on it side, as a platform for art models to stand or to lie on and finally as a disappearing piece of equipment by hiding the flatten X under the sofa and resting vertically the table top against a wall behind a curtain and some plants...

  16. Hello, do you feel the trestle is as sturdy as traditional table legs? Just worried that the table will topple over if enough weight is put on it...

    Love the design.

  17. I got a really nice hercules ez-lock keyboard stand its a double X and has no knob it just lock automatically and its really sturdy!!!! If your worried about it not being stable get this! The only draw back is it doesn't go super low only 20.5in which is fine for me!

  18. You are my hero! I am short and can never find a table that is the right height for me - this could very well be my answer!!

  19. I like it innovating and inspiring I am going to try this but with wood under carriage cost should be about the same thanks for the idea

  20. Where did you get the curtain rod stand-off brackets?
Is there a parts list available?

    ReplyDelete
  21. I was going to ask the same question about the curtain rod brackets. I'm in the U.S., and have no idea where I could get brackets like this (at the depth needed for the keyboard stand - I scored one for free on Craigslist!)

If anyone knows of a source for those of us in the US, please post.

  22. Just an idea:
What if you connect the uppert part of the X with springs?

With this springs, the X will close itself, and you don't have to lift the table!

  23. got an idea about this post. i love the coffee table and i want to have one.

  27. It almost looks like an ironing board base. wonder if that would work. Talk about your multi tasking furniture. Love it.
