Materials: 4 drawer Malm x 2 and a saw
Description:
Moved house and needed a new single bed.
Removed the draws measured 20" from the top down to the base of the second front cross piece.
Mark and saw in half....same again to the second set of draws.
Screw them all together make a new top (making the bed base) for the lower halves add an 8" by 37" shelf to the bottom replace the draws and you have lots of storage and a single bed base new mattress = a comfy single bed.
We will use the remaining draw fronts to make open shelves in the same bedroom.
All will be primed and painted white.

ReplyDeleteYou might want to think about adding in some slots in the top so the bed can breathe or maybe an artificial layer of slats. That way you avoid mold or musky smells (a box spring is pretty porous and platform beds have slats). Probably not a big problem but might something to think about.
ReplyDeleteI use peg board as a base, as most modern matresses don't play nice with slats and they prefer an ensemble base. The peg board provides the support, but also lets it breath without having issues with springs sitting between slats.

ReplyDeleteThis does not measure up correctly. 2 malm dressers placed side by side is only 63 1/4 inches long. A twin bed mattress is 75 inches. How do you support the extra 12 inches?
ReplyDeleteFor a queen size. 3 Malm 4 drawer dressers cut as above. place with drawers facing out on both sides. Top with 2 sheets of 3/4" plywood cut to 60" x 48. This will yield a bed platform 60" wide x 96" long. (queen mattress is 60 x 80) Place an EXPEDIT bookcase on it's side as a headboard. Optionally you can place a queen box spring directly on Malms but this raises height of bed.
ReplyDeleteHi William you're right but my mattress is about 74" long and there is a tiny overhang but it's not going any where and has full support so not a problem....guessed the bed length and made the shelf 8" to make a 6' bed base should have been about 10" really but with skirting and the 1/2 chests not right up the the wall the over hang really isn't a problem

Are the drawers functional in this design? Trying to find a hack to turn something into a twin with underdrawers and maybe a bookshelf headboard.
