Materials: PAX
Description: My girlfriend and I bought and moved into our first apartment, with a tight budget we couldn't afford anything bigger then a studio apartment.
I can't imagine anyone wanting to have their bed in their living room, so we started to brainstorm. We discussed ever type of foldaway bed and room divider. Then we found IKEA's PAX sliding cupboard doors.
We bought the biggest we could find in light aluminum and frosted glass.
We measured the size of our Ikea beds and marked off the new room so it would fit our bed and some clothing space tightly in order to save as much space in the living room as possible.
I whipped up 2 wooden frames and mounted them to the ceiling, walls and floor. I then mounted the PAX doors and tidied up the frame.
I installed four IKEA LED (color changing) spots in the frame so it would light up the frosted glass.
We finished up our new bedroom with some LACK shelves and a little art work.
In the meantime we mounted 6 IKEA kitchen cupboards over the TV in the living room and integrated the TV and PC cables into the wall so we could tidily hide the Stereo and PC in the cupboards with no exposed wires. We then mounted the surround sound speakers underneath the cupboard.
This was my first ever renovation at the age of 22, by myself. So if you have a small apartment and a lot of tolerance it's not that hard or expensive to turn your studio apartment into a 1 bedroom apartment.

Pleeeeeeaaaaase Designguy, inquiring minds want to know: 1)A little more detail/description(mainly size of door, door tracking) and 2)How does the landlord feel? Or is this easily dismountable with little enough tear on the apartment that it might just be a small deduction from the deposit? I'd love to do something like this, but lasting damage is my main worry(assuming the renter doesn't want to keep it when you're gone)
ReplyDeleteSince he and his girlfriend "bought and moved into" the place, I don't think there's a landlord having an infarct. It's very well executed - I'd have "borrowed" another 4in or so (probably because I'm too old to be crawling into bed from the foot any more. HA!)
ReplyDeleteThe only thing I don't think I could deal with is the claustrophobia of being enclosed on three sides. Then again, they could always sleep with the door open next to the bed.

Hi, What a great hack! Although I probably would have gone for the new white glass Pax doors with the shadowy branch photoprint as I really love the look of these and I might have used Besta instead of the kitchen cupboards.

I also have my bed enclosed on three sides (by walls) and so can inform the curious questioners that it is possible to learn how to change the sheets whilst kneeling in the middle of the mattress. It doesn't make me feel claustrophobic, in fact sleeping this way feels like a cosy nest. But the men on this Reservoir Dogs-esque wall would give me nightmares!
Brilliant work, you did a fantastic job. The LEDs were a nice finishing touch. At 22, you should be very proud to have your life so "together".
ReplyDeleteThe only mild fear or question I would have is the very, very slight possibility of injury from broken glass...maybe from slipping/falling/err...getting wild in bed...? I've never seen these doors in person, but I'm assuming they're fairly thin.
I can imagine getting caught up in the moment, and a foot accidentally smashing through the pane of glass. Just a thought.

great and fabulous idea! my family and me are moving to a new used house in some month and i'm planning to have sth like that for my parents room, just to create a kind of a corridor to divide the bedroom from the bathroom and have a wardrobe at the same time. i'll study your project in some way, i'll submit to someone that can help me build this, but, please, will you give me (too) some other details of it?
ReplyDeleteps what i don't like is the green-and-pumpkin flowery wallpaper in the living room, but the pax wall gives you so many points that, even with "that" wallpaper, you are still in a good position
I don't see the track for the bottom of the doors, are they just dangling from the top track? If you did use it, i would suspect it would be easy to trip on it.
ReplyDeleteWOW! This studio is gorgeous! I absolutely love the door to the bed area. This would even be great in a regular size condo with a large bedroom. It really breaks off the bed and gives it a very private and safe feel.

ReplyDeleteChanging the sheets isn't that hard, in Sweden it's traditional to have a fairly thin matress, so you can simply fold it back and tuck in the sheet.

The bottom track was held in place with the frame (a piece of wood screwd into the floor) you would think it would be hard to match it up and ran smoothly but to be honest it worked perfectly first time, no adjustments required!

Believe it or not they're not wall decals, I took the original photo from Reservoir Dogs, vectorized it in Adobe Illustrator and projected it onto the wall using a home cinema projector, I then traced the projected outline in pencil, went over it with a permenant black marker and painted with standard black wall paint.

The Doors were 3 meters wide, the track was a little bigger, once again, no lanlord, we owned the apartment we actually bought the apartment (with average wallpaper and the bed in the living room) renovated for just over a month, nothing major (apart from the wall) we sold it a year later and made a bit over 40% profit... in one year. Now we own an apartment 3 twice the size, and when I am finished 'hacking' it I'll post it. :)

Actually it wasn't as tight as you may think, and we often had the doors pushed open / 'to the left' so when you got out of bed you exitted the room at the same time, but the main idea behind it is to cleanly hide the bed when you've got company.

The cupboards over the TV is actually kitchen cupboards from ikea, the reason we mounted them over the tv instead of under is because when you see more of the floor; it makes the space look much bigger.

We did by the doors without the cupboards, because you can mix and match what style of doors you want with what cupboard, maybe this is only available in Sweden??

ReplyDeleteI went down to the IKEA store and was underwhelmed unfortunately, first off by the price: the doors alone are close to 900 euros (at least in the Greek IKEA store). And even if they had turned out to be more reasonably priced, the back side of the doors (ie from inside the bedroom) isn't that nice of a thing to look at, unless you've found some way of concealing the door's visible frames without canceling the luminosity effect of the glass?
Also, it would help if you could go into some more detail re: the bottom rail. You say you implemented it into the floor, so I assume the rail is also visible when the doors are open? A few more pics would help, perhaps you can upload them somewhere like flickr and give us a link here?
Sidenote: the glass is what they call safety-crystal, it's very hard to crack, but even you manage it, it breaks int a million tiny little pieces that don't even fall off --much like a car's windshield, they're designed especially so that they won't injure anyone if they break. That's why they're so damn expensive.

I wanted to do this at the 30 m2 studio I share with my son. It wrked out too expensive so I changed my mind and use now 6 Anno Unni panel curtains, which look quite good both fully closed and pulled to one side ;-)

I made a sliding door from an old one: I bought a sliding rail and fittings in the OBI, got rid of the old surrounding and made new one from wood. I think that was cheaper but after Your brilliant solution I'm thinking these doors to the wardrobe :D

ReplyDeleteWhat I love most is the dining room, or, more specifically, the "door". It's absolutely stunning, and the colors as well.
I would never be able to build such a thing myself, and I wonder if maybe my dad could do it, or how much a carpenter would ask for such a mod.

ReplyDeleteI lived in an L-shaped studio with apparently that identical configuration just north of NYC and did just about that same thing with the reclaimed closet doors and some fabric instead of the IKEA treatment. I must say though that the IKEA treatment looks much better.

ReplyDeleteThis looks absolutely stunning! I really wish I was that handy. Very imaginative! In fact, your entire space is quite lovely. I've been looking at condos in Montreal and the more affordable ones of the bunch to be very open - I'm not a fan of having my bed in my living room - and I was trying to think of ways, other than using fabric, to partition the space. This proves to be the best idea. I hope when I'm ready to buy that I'll be able to achieve something like this or hire someone that will be able to at least!

To be honest; before we designed the build I actually looked around the net for inspiration or a similar execution of this idea but found nothing. @ Dee, we owned the apartment so no need to disassemble in fact I think it majorly increased the selling price of the apartment, in regards to the clothes, we kept them at the end of the bed, if you look at the pic with the reservoir dogs painting, there were 2 poles to the left of that painting where we hung all of our clothes.

ReplyDelete@ Jennifer D'Souza, sorry to hear that your having trouble finding just the doors, to be honest they are listed as a whole cupboard unit on the Swedish IKEA site too, we had to go in and request the price without the cupboard, it was no hassel and a lot cheaper. I hope you can do the same in UAE, good luck.
@ Anon, as previously said, no wall sticker, it's a 'vector' / image that I projected on to the wall, traced, then painted! give it a go, it's a piece of cake.
@ Tamara, Sorry I can't provide you with more detailed picks of the floor rail, we didn't take any and have moved. I can say that it was relativley easy, just a single piece of thick wood with the 'ikea included' metal skirt drilled into it. The top of the door is more important because the door hangs much more then it rests on the floor. I had NEVER done anything like this before, did not put a huge amount of effort into planning and still managed to get it right first time, so my advice is don't overthink it, just jump in!

@ flexluthor, The table in the living room is a version of 'elipse' (from MIO [Sweden]) the table and chairs in the dining room (which you can see briefly in the last pic) is called FUSION and is of course from IKEA :) the chairs in the living room are 'hand me downs'and I have unfortunaley no idea where they have come from...

This is really great and it looks beautiful. As there are so many PAX wardrobes and doors can you specify exactly which doors you used and the sizes (or can you get different sizes)? Also can one buy doors separately? Thanks.

Deletethats not happening in California..I doubt they will allow the contruction of a wooden frame inside an Apartment..They will take your deposit and not return it.
ReplyDeleteYeah, but how would they find out? do they check the apartments on a regular basis? because I have no doubt that to remove that would take a drill, some filler, some paint and about 2 hours. //thedesignguy
DeleteWould take a little bit of undoing, but there's no reason you couldn't build a 2x4/drywall partition wall like that and remove it when you vacated.
ReplyDeleteNot sure you check this still - but how do you feel about air circulation with the doors closed? We have a basement (with windows) that we want to create a bedroom in. We don't want it to get "musty" and damp feeling though... What do you think? I doubt the doors are air-tight. Thanks! :)
ReplyDeleteTo be honest air circulation was nothin I really considered but we also often slept with the doors open and closed them when we had guests, that was the whole idea behind them. The doors are definitely not air tight, there is a good size gap at the top and bottom of the doors but those gaps aren't visible when looking at the doors front on. //thedesignguy

ReplyDeleteBuy a nice bed and make it a statement piece instead of breaking up your apartment into little dank spaces. Put some cool patterned cushions and use the mattress as a daybed when you have guests.

ReplyDeleteHi Nikko, We had actually bought the apartment so the decision was ours to make. The wholes that I drilled in the floor and walls would be easily filled if the next owner wanted to remove the frame and I think that with a bit of effort you could avoid drilling the base frame into the floor. This is because the doors hang from the panel attached to the ceiling, the floor plank is only to keep them straight. If I wanted to avoid drilling into the floor I would mount the floor plank to the walls (you would lose strength but I don't think it would be impossible). good luck with it!

ReplyDeleteSomeone mentioned about the danger of the glass, if it is not safely glass, you can always get someone to put some film on the glass. We have chidren and an internal French door with non safety glass, a guy put some film on, you could not see it but if the glass was ever smashed, it would all stay together like laminated glass. It was so cheap as well.
