Billy rat cage

Materials: Billy bookcase, some shelves, hinges, …

Description: The cage of our rats became too small and we had problems with the old cage because of litter falling all the time. So I reused a Billy bookcase (because I bought a new bookcase) and I separate it into three parts: one part storage, one part for our young rats and a part for our adult rats.

I bought some shelves and put an edge of 5 cm attached with dowels to prevent the litter from falling. Finally I painted everything.

For the doors, I assembled boards with dowels and wood glue and I put the grate recovered from the old cage.

Um, how long before the rats chew their way out?

I kept 5 pet rats in a converted bookcase for almost 3 years. They never tried to chew their way out.

Your doors look way better than mine did, and I love the idea of turning the ramps into little houses.

This looks like a great way to house rats!

As for chewing out, I would think as long as they are being fed, they have no reason to leave.

Uhhh, PETA would love this concoction.

    Is this hard to clean?

Saw your comment just now, but if you’re still interested it wasn’t hard to clean at all, i took the shelves out and threw the litter in the trash. Since i haven’t any pet anymore, i transformed the bookcase into storage with faktum doors, i can say that my billy bookcases served a lot ;-)
