Materials: 30" Akurum horizontal wall cabinet, reclaimed Douglas fir, MDF panels
Description: I have a custom furniture/cabinetry company in LA, Handmade, that has just launched a line of custom doors, panels and drawer faces for frameless kitchen and bathroom cabinets - anything from the big-box lines, IKEA, you name it. We call the line SEMIhandmade.
In the photos, we took 2 Akurum 30" horizontal wall cabinets, screwed them together, then made doors from reclaimed Douglas fir framing lumber. On the sides are white MDF panels to give the piece a built-in look. We finished everything in low-VOC, water-based lacquer.

This is a great idea, but I thought Ikea Hacker was about showing how you can do it yourself, not where to buy a hack. Hmmm.

ReplyDeleteHey I like it! This is great for inspiration. This blog is about hacks, and these are indeed hacks. I think this blog is more about inspiration than DIY instructions.

Nice display. I like the look of the front panels. Would like to see a bit more how-to explanations though.

ReplyDeleteMaybe I'm not interpreting this correctly, but the intent seems to be that you (their customer) buy the cabinet portion, and then use their fronts to make the stuff look nice - they don't sell the cabinetry directly, just the fronts.

ReplyDeletei'm the poster, so let me clear a few things up:
1) i didn't post them for any reason other than to show a really nice upgrade on what is already a great product.
2) we are not in any way affiliated with IKEA; what we are offering is for anybody with frameless cabinets, new or old, though IKEA is the one manufacturer that sells cabinets without doors.
3) it is, i think, a way of recycling - forget the fact that at least half of what we offer is from reclaimed materials. we are saying, "if you don't want to buy new, then keep the cabinets you have, save yourself a trip to the landfill, and let us spruce things up."
anyway, i hope that clears things up. i'm a big fan of the site!

The doors are old framing 2 by 6's - most had a fair amount of old paint on them which I tried to preserve. I then shot everything with a water-based lacquer which really brings out the warm tones.
