Materials: Ikea Malm Bedframe, plywood, batting, fabric, staple gun, L brackets, screws
Description: I owned the Ikea Malm bedframe and wanted to add height to my headboard. With a quick trip to a local hardware and fabric store, I came home with plywood, L- brackets, screws, a staple gun, batting, and fabric. In a couple hours I completely transformed my bed from blah to BAM!
before
I first added 18" in height to the headboard by attaching a piece of plywood that matched the width of the Ikea frame. I did this with (3) L-brackets each requiring (2) screws and a scrap piece of plywood using (8) screws.
I next wrapped the plywood and then the entire "new" headboard in a couple sheets of batting stapling it across the back on the sides and top.
The last step was wrapping my heightened headboard in the linen fabric I chose stapling it again on the back across the top and sides.
It really was a piece of cake and I love the visual impact my headboard now has in the room!

Very Lovely!! Nice job! It enhances the room and still have a clean, minimal feel. Looks very relaxing and comfortable.
ReplyDeleteGreat job! I am so gonna copy that!
ReplyDeleteThat looks great. Brings some class to the standard malm that usually just looks collegey. Great job on the rest of the room too! Makes my fabric headboard look amatuer.
ReplyDeleteNever knew lack side tables were the same exact height as the bed. Gives a good look.
I love that! I think it looks great, mays it look like a hotel get-away.
ReplyDeleteIm totally stealing that too.
Great Job! and I love it. I always hope to hack my Malm with a higher headboard. May I ask how do you handle the lower part of the fabric that wrap around the Malm headboard?
ReplyDeleteThis is awesome! breathtaking. I've looked at it at least 3 different times today. I totally want to do something like this for the malm bed we have!
ReplyDeleteDo you have a regular mattress and box springs on the bed? It looks like the mattress sits a little higher. (something else I'd like to change about our malm bed...:))
Love this headboard idea!

Very nice! I love how this simple solution gives the whole room a clean but friendly feel to it. Comfy + contemporary.
ReplyDeleteThis look would be a great fit for one of the new homes at Kootenay Lake Village.
your room is great! this looks like a professional job. i also noticed the lack side table nightstands. very nice!
ReplyDeleteSo exactly how tall is your headboard now?
ReplyDeleteThank you for all the nice comments!
ReplyDelete@britwash- The total height is now 48"
@leslie- I don't have a boxspring, just a mattress on the slat rails. I believe the rails can be installed at two heights and I have them at the higher one so the bed will sit a little taller.
@anonymous- I actually stapled the fabric on the front of the headboard along the bottom to help secure it. The fabric sits right at where the siderails meet the headboard and I just stapled along that line all the way across. The mattress covers it completely.
Do you think this would be possible to do on a bed that didnt already have a headboard like the ELGAN one?
ReplyDeleteHi, I absolutely love it! But I am sorry, I am terrible with DIY projects... I don't understand where the "scrap piece of plywood using (8) screws" go? Would you mind explaining it? Thanks so much! I really want to get this project as soon as possible!!
ReplyDeleteThank you!
The room looks fantastic! Where did you get the "P" monogram cube? My last name starts with P too and I've been looking for something like that for our house...
ReplyDeleteHi,
ReplyDeleteI love what you did with your bedroom. May I ask where you got those lamps or where I can get similar because they really add a touch of color.
Thanks!
I love your headboard! We did something else though. We only have a bed frame, and I wanted a cottage white headboard, but it was too expensive. Was looking to buy some picet fencing when I came across a picture on stretched canvas at Ikea. My room is medium green walls with white furniture, and ikea has an abstract picture of large leaves of green and tan on cream color. Turned sideways, hung above the bed, it is the width of the bed, and is the height of a headboard. When we want to sit up in bed, we just put a few pillows behind us. We've had it there for 3 years and still in great shape!
ReplyDeleteBernice (I love Ikea!)
Hi! I love your work, this is exactly what I am looking for! Could you pls post more pictures, I would love to see what you did to the back and pherhaps the bottom? What about the corners? Did the fabric make them look rounded?
ReplyDeleteTHANKS for the inspiration! (and know-how..)
This is AWESOME! Thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteI understand the plywood the width of the headboard. What did you need the scrap of plywood for?
ReplyDeleteI really really like this! My bedroom looks so boring - this idea could take it to another level.
ReplyDeleteThank you SO much for the inspiration!!
Would be a good idea to give it a good spray with Scotchguard/fabric protecting spray. Will look cleaner for longer.
ReplyDeleteHello I have a few questions if you do not mind. How think is the plywood you bought? Also what fabric did you buy? I love the way it looks, I've been looking for that fabric and can't seem to find it. Thanks so much and hope you get back to me. :)
ReplyDeleteWhich staple gun did you use to penetrate into / attach upholstery to the MALM bedframe??
ReplyDeleteI know this was posted in 2010 but Meg what did you use the 2nd piece of plywood for? Did you layer it on top of the 1st piece of plywood?
ReplyDeleteHi, I have the same question as Anonymous from 7/8/10... did you attach the extra plywood to the back of the headboard? Was it to reinforce the batting and fabric staples?
ReplyDeleteThanks!
