Wow, I guess you could only do but so much with what you've got there, so I'll give you points for figuring it out to make it work. It's not so bad really, and it does give you the light you needed there. Once you're in your own place, your creative thinking will certainly come in handy!
If you wanted to get rid of the zipties, you could drill a hole in the tension rod and run the lamp chord through it. Great effort!

how do you keep it from slipping down the wall? does it provide an adequate amount of light?
