Materials: Expedit bookcases, Lekman bins
Description: We had two of the big daddy Expedit book cases and were using them with Lekman bins as a dresser. As you can see, it's not so hot looking to be able to see all of your clothes and such through the plastic, so we decided to make fronts. We bought foam core board, and cut them to size. I bought some really cheap cream burlap (like 2 bucks a yard) and we used a spray mount to cover the boards with fabric.
Then we hot glued them to the front of the plastic bins.
I ordered some vintage nobs on ebay. We poked holes in the center of the boards and used a super ghetto combination of washers and cardboard to connect them through the center holes of Lekman boxes.
Does that make sense?
Voila...super sleek looking storage with no socks showing through. Go ikea!

I LOVE this, but in Canada that'd cost $480 in clear plastic bins alone (the ones used here) plus shelves, knobs, mdf. It's a sexy shelf though. Now that the Drona box is available (granted only in black, pink, and blue, for $6.99 canadian, vs $20 each, it'd be 29% of the bin cost at $140. A hack has to be custom (check) show your personality (check) and for me, be more reasonably priced than something i could pick up at a store. BUT paying for custom is not a bad thing. Just goes against my nature.

ReplyDeleteI would like to add two sliding doors to the front of my Expedit bookcase to keep my 2 year old out of it.
My only option right now is to use cardboard and duct taped to the front of the lower half. While it is unsightly, my 2 year has figured out how to get around my weak modification.
Do you think that it is possible to add sliding doors to the front of the bookcase? Have you tried to add sliding doors to your Expedit bookcase?
I agree using the word "ghetto" to describe how you created something is offensive. The ghetto is a cultural entity comprised of disadvantaged individuals sometimes by no fault of their own. That was a truly insensitive statement.

Nice idea, but cobbling together something with materials that cost more in total than buying something ready-made seems like a waste of time and money.
