Hallway storage bench
Materials: Besta shelf units, Inreda drawers
Description: I wanted something in our front hallway where we could store shoes, umbrellas, gloves, etc; put the mail and house keys; and have somewhere to sit when putting on or removing shoes (we like to keep the house shoe-free as much as possible).
I bought three Besta shelf units -- two singles, one double -- and screwed them all together in an L shape. The open shelves at the bottom hold shoes, reusable shopping bags and umbrellas. I installed two Inreda glass drawers up top to hold smaller objects, such as gloves, scarves, sunglasses, bicycle lights, etc. Up top I have some baskets for mail and keys, and I found three square cushions at a futon store that perfectly fit the width of the bench.

very nice...
ReplyDeletei agree, really nice
ReplyDeleteI wish my hallway were big enough for this!
ReplyDeleteMaximum shoes size?
ReplyDeleteVERY cool.
ReplyDeleteNice, very neat and practical. What I like the most: having somewhere to sit when putting on or removing shoes. This one's big, talk about comfort rather than kneeling down awkwardly to wear your shoes!

o sweet. i was JUST looking for a shoe bench! i see that the max load on ikea's site says 66lbs, is that okay for someone to sit on?
ReplyDeleteHi Jolene. Sorry for the delay -- I just happened to come back to this post to copy the URL for a friend.
ReplyDeleteWe've had the bench in the hallway for about a year now, and we've had no problems with sitting on it. Granted, we're usually not sitting for more than a few minutes, but it doesn't feel at all unsturdy when we are. If you look below you'll see we have 10 of the little feet holding it up (6 on the double-width and 4 on the single). Hope that helps.
Hi Ali, what did you use for the feet? thanks.
ReplyDeleteHi Pinkmoto. We used sets of the Ikea legs that go with Besta, I think they were also called Besta. I don't see those particular ones on the site anymore but there are plenty of other Besta and Capita legs to choose from.
