Now to the hack. Keri (and Teddy) recently moved to a new apartment, with a fabulous fitted kitchen but no place for Teddy to ... er ... do his business.
Keri adds, "(The kitchen) is too well fitted in fact as there was no convenient nook for Teddy's litter tray as there was in my last place.
Taking Dee's kitty litter hideaway as inspiration I decided to hack one of my Ikea Hol side tables.
I bought a Projs desk pad and cut it down to fit inside the base of the Hol, so I could take it out and clean it to keep Teddy's bathroom extra hygenic. Using a jigsaw, cut a doorway in the side of the Hol, and sanded down the edges so they are rounded. Also fitted hinges so make cleaning his tray out easier.
I'm really pleased with the result. It's not original, but I used a smaller Hol than Dee had used, as my shower room is small, and the Hol side table looks like a laundry basket.
Before cutting the hole I'd checked Teddy was happy with using his tray inside a box by just using it on it's side with no lid.
By the way, when I was in Ikea this weekend I noticed that the Hol storage bench that Dee had used is back in stock, for £45. I know a few of your contributors have used it for some incredibly creative hacks, so thought your site visitors would like to know it is available again, in the UK at least!"
What you can hack with a hol:
- Printer stand
- Dog crate
- Computer case
- Radiator cover
- HPTC box
- Subwoofer box

Great minds think alike! We did the exact same thing, but with the larger Hol (kitty doesn't like closed in hooded litter pans, so we wanted to give her a lot of space.)
ReplyDeleteThat's awesome! Looks just like a clothes hamper! :) Congrats
ReplyDeleteVery nice, we'll be looking for the Hol next time we're in Ikea!
ReplyDeleteThanks guys! Here in the UK at least the small Hol like I used is still available, and the double width one is back in store. Look forward to seeing your Hol hacks soon :) -- Keri, UK
ReplyDeleteVery creative and I like the idea!
ReplyDeleteI going to use you idea! i hope you don't mind? Now we just have the litter under the vanity of our sink... This will not look as bad!
ReplyDeleteThank you,

Where did everybody get the litter box that will fit inside. Everything I keep coming across is too big?
ReplyDeleteI bought mine in Pets at Home here in the UK -- Keri
ReplyDeleteI had to give up the hack because the toilet box I bought was a few centimetres too large for the HOL :(
ReplyDelete(I bought the corner one, and the actual measurements were not the same ones described in the website).
Fortunately, cats live longer than a litter box and I eventually will be able to get it done. I will keep the HOL for storage of the kitty stuff.
OK, I tracked down the exact make of litter tray I used for this hack, which definitely fits the Hol. It's the Savic Cat Litter Oval Tray. Hope this helps you hackers! -- Keri http://www.savic.be/tray-rim-oval-medium
ReplyDeletehurry up to get the Hol, i heard it's going out of production. stalked 2 ikeas last night to get my hands on one of these cubes, even if the cat won't go in, i'll definitely keep it - so cute!
ReplyDeletemy cat is 14lbs so i had to get the largest pan that could fit in this thing, which took some searchin' so i figured i'd come back to this page to post what i came up with - for all of you with large kittehs, look for Petmate Hi-Back Cat Litter Pans
ReplyDeleteI did this, and ended up having to put a covered pan inside. My cats would miss the pan and their poo would end up stuck in the little holes of the box. And when they covered their poo, the litter would come flying out the holes. Just FYI ... you might need to align the door cut with a covered pan's door.
ReplyDeleteI did this, but with the bigger Hol box, and I put a covered cat litter box inside, with a mat in front of it, to keep it cleaner. It has room to store extra cat litter too. And I made a furry cushion to put on top, so now my cats have a comfy place to sleep as well. If you want to see my version, check it out here:
