Toothbrush cup nightstand

Fancy some reading and a glass of water before turning in but have no space for a nightstand? Here’s a simple solution from Angela.

“It’s not so much a hack but rather a creative misuse of an Ikea product. When I remodeled our bedroom last year, I realized that there wasn’t enough room left for nightstands.

However, we do tend to get thirsty during the night and I just love to read a couple of pages before falling asleep. To solve our problem …

… I bought a Lillholmen toothbrush cup with holder in the bathroom department and fixed it to the wall. In order to hold my books and reading glasses, I found a beautiful wall basket in the small storage department. Problem solved!”

  1. Nice idea…every things must have their own space and place…that makes the room very tidy and neat and nice to look at.

Nice idea. The only thing I would change is the position of the cup holder. I would fix it next to the basket, not above it. + placing the cup back into the holder while half asleep may be tricky…

I love the idea, but I don’t really get the rationale … Obviously you have space for a basket, so you could as well bolt a small shelf to the wall. Anyway, I like this much.

  4. Perfect!I love it!
I post this hack in my blog today…putting the credits,of course!
    xoxo

  5. What a GREAT idea!! For me it works because I am less likely to knock that glass off of the shelf when I’m tossing my pillows around in a desperate attempt to sleep!

What I really like on this picture however, is the excellent solution with the power outlet attached to the bed… But it is a good solution with the cup too, even if there is space for a shelf is you want one, the glass stays in it’s holder here…

  7. What a cool idea. I love it!!!

I like this idea. It would mean I wouldn’t have to take creative measures in avoiding my cat trying to sneak a drink of my water glass at night.

  9. Jen says:

I really like this idea! I would also move the cup, though – it seems like it’s just waiting to get knocked over onto the books!

  10. kartenlegen says:

This is a good way of minimizing the space. Good idea.

  11. Angela says:

@Ann-Katrin: I used velcro tape to fix the power outlet to the bed. Not very elegant at all, but it works. Guess you could use any double sided tape. Velcro was what I had lying around at the time.

Where does the alarm clock go? :)

@Angela: Easiest non-permanent way to fix outlet strips to a bed foot: Large zip ties, around its “waist” between sockets.

  15. Anonymous says:

fantabulous. love it all! Just need a little slot for the clockradio’s remote!

TOO COOL! I loved this idea and ran right out this weekend for supplies, only I used a basket from wally world and the “gorilla hooks” that are supposed to hold up to 30 lbs for super-easy installation. The result is clean and uncluttered. MUCH nicer than the too-big table I previously used. Thanks, Angela!

“the creative misuse of an ikea product”, that sounds like the very definition of an ikea hack!

  18. Angela says:

@Anonymous: What I meant was I didn’t make any changes whatsoever to the products, unlike others on this blog.

  19. Anonymous says:

    whta are the baskets called??

  20. Anonymous says:

I did this as well! My kitten likes to drink out of our water glasses and kept knocking them over on the bedside tables, endangering electronics and books. We installed these a couple of feet above the bedside tables, which are quite low to the ground, and he can no longer reach them. No more soggy book pages for us, and it’ll probably save a cell phone or two in the long run!

  21. Hologram says:

This is cool! But i would hold a small water bottle instead of glass! ;-)

  22. Wonderful idea.. Thanks!!!

  23. Mini Malave says:

I LOVE this idea because I have a similar problem as well. I also just thought about using those same cup holders (w/glass cups if possible) and putting teacup candles (as sconces sort of) for a romantic effect. :)

  24. Organized people are so creative at keeping things clean and tidy – I am envious!

  25. MGal says:

I used your great idea for a nightstand on a Design Board for my friend Anna. You can see the board here on my blog: http://watchmediy.com/?p=459

Thanks again for the great ideas IkeaHacker!
