"I bought my Ikea Kullen closet and turned it into a rat cage. Most standard cages are too small, rats like to run, climb and explore. I put in 4 levels and connected the bigger part of the closet with the small part on the right.
The tunnels are made of Nöje.
The houses are made of Försiktig
The toilets are Trofast drawers.
The blue box on the second floor on the right side and the two smaller ones attached to the left door are Fabler.
And the blue little punnets are also from Ikea, but I couldn't find them on their website, they were on sale when I bought them."

ReplyDeleteI once read a warning not to make a rodent cage out of anything chewable because they'd escape in no time. I wondered if that's only if they really hate their cage, or if they just naturally try all the time.
What lucky rats! They're such sweet, affectionate pets, and it's really gratifying to see someone go to such creative lengths to make them a happy home. I'm amazed at the thought and effort put into this (and, thanks to Ikea, at a fraction of what it could have cost).

This is sooo cool. Rats are such great pets. It makes me want to build a home like this and keep rats again. My last batch died a few years ago. Your rats are going to have the biggest brains because you keep them so stimulated. Good job!
ReplyDeleteYeah, technically rats could chew threw it, but there's so many surfaces inside to chew on they won't bother. Anyway, well-loved rats don't want to escape. The quickest way to "catch" them, is to put one of their little houses on the ground and they'll run right back in, if they don't see you first and crawl up an arm or leg. I love rats!
That look great! I have a ferret that would be elated to be in that cage. I don't know what they are called by I do have one of the green, springy containers as one of his beds. It is a very cheap alternative to the ones made especially for the fuzzies.
ReplyDeleteI have been unable to keep rats anymore because of developing an allergy, however, I do believe they are awesome pets. You did an amazing job with the enclosure and your rats appear to love it. Great job!
