Expedit lockers
Robin left out some shelves and added some doors to the Expedit and now have lockers for the mudroom!

ReplyDeleteI just cut the doors from some bead board and lined them with some trim, threw some overlay hinges on and voila! I am no handyman and it was quite easy.

ReplyDeleteIs there any structural compromise from leaving out a few shelves? Do you find it wobbles from side to side easily?
It was pretty stable without the shelves but as an added precaution i installed the safety brackets to the wall. They came with the unit. cheers

ReplyDeleteLooks fantastic! When you installed coat coat hooks, did the expedit split or crack? Does the unit hold the hook securely enough to hold a winter coat?

ReplyDeleteWould love to do this, I wonder about the hooks as well. Any problem with the expedit cracking, and did you have to reinforce the hooks in any way to hold heavy coats? How has it held up to child wear and tear?

ReplyDeletewish there was MORE INFO on this particular hack. Seems like no one else has attempted it, and I've Googled the heck out of it too! for my shelves the long shelves are horizontal when assembled the the correct way. I have to flip it to one side to get the long shelves to go vertical, then the bottom becomes a side, which is unfinished (not a big deal I will just paint it) but then what about the hooks? wondering what kind of hooks, bolts or screws are used to hold up any "real" weight seeing as the boards are made of MDF, I'm worried about having a "blow out" when attempting to attach a hook, and then it just falling off when you hang any heavy coat, bag or whatever on it. The small shelves that become the cubbies, they are only supported the wire "guides" on each side, when built the "correct" expedit way, anything you put in any of the cubbies, the weight is distributed to the long boards, and then down, turned this way does not seem it would be able to hold as much, but it does feel more sturdy than what I thought it would. I have not "used" our expidit hack yet, so don't know all the factors for sure. was hoping to find something on it online, but alas nothing.

I have been trying to figure out a good way to do the doors so that they aren't too heavy to hang from the hollow wood on outside parts of the unit. I am just wondering how you did the trim, what did you make them out of? I did a kitchen cabinet out of an expedit and desparately need doors and these are perfect! Thank you so much and I can't wait to hear back!
