"My recent project, altho' there's not too much 'hacking' going on, there is some. I used two Varde free standing kitchen units in my recent workshop remodel. I needed a sturdy bench, so I was able to use a single 57"span of extra Varde counter-top to span across the two units giving a strong bench to work on. I cut the other two counters tops to fit the remaining space."

ReplyDeleteyou'll notice the left hand side of the bench was empty in the photo - it's now jam-packed with my wife's encaustic painting gear. :)
I love this. It would be great for a craft studio as well. A bit on the pricey side though.

ReplyDeleteI couldn't find any Varde cabinets with the 9 drawers as displayed in your pict. Did you use cabinets that are a bit older and perhaps no longer sold by ikea, or did you custom install these drawers?
Also, I have to admit, I'm a novice carpenter. Just wondering how you went about affixing the three counter tops to the 2 bases. I'm assuming that the original top was affixed to the base at each of the 4 corners. So if you cut the original tops, that would leave 2 unaffixed counter-top edges, no?

with the counter-top, i took one counter-top whole and used it to span the gap between the two units - screwing it down into where it overlapped the units and also screwing into a small strip of wood i mounted on the wall studs to take additional load.
i then took another counter-top and scribed it to the wall for a tight fit, then cut the scribed end. with it in place, i could then mark exactly where it overlapped the installed counter-top and cut there for a very precise fit. rinse and repeat for the other side.
i then used a wood epoxy to fill any small gaps between them. sand and poly finish and it's all good.
the counter-tops can be screwed in from underneath from pretty much any location - so you are not restricted to the 4 corners.

ReplyDeleteExcellent Idea, and a really nice workbench. I've just stolen it, using the 3 drawer stainless Varde units ref. 90049200, as I only have 2.88m to stretch.
