"My husband worked on installing 'built-ins' for about 4 weekends in a row using the new 'black-brown' Pax wardrobes that Ikea has. He customized them to make them look like built-ins by cutting down two of the smaller closets to create symmetrical shelves on either side (so it didn't just look like a big hulking wall of closets).

I can't stand the little peg holes, so he turned around the pieces and drilled new permanent holes for the shelves (so that the line of holes is facing out where no one would see it). Then he cut down two doors so that our TV would be exposed (also to again add some decorative shelving around it so it wasn't just a wall of closets).
We found pulls that looked like our bedside table pulls and we also dyed the little plastic shelf holders black (for some reason they don't make a "black-brown" version of those little shelf holders so they stick out like a sore thumb.)Now when people get a tour of the house they say 'Oh, were those built-ins here when you moved in?' We think we saved ourselves at LEAST 10K!"

Those look excellent!! Great job!
ReplyDeleteWOW!
ReplyDeleteVery impressive! Although, I am curious. How do you clean the top part? It looks a bit tight up there.
ReplyDeleteThat looks fantastic.
ReplyDelete@Jesper to clean the top you could get on of those swiffers that bend or just use a cloth and a flat stick (like the kind you mix paint with). The crack is large enough to get the cloth in then you just wipe. You would also need a ladder.
ReplyDeleteI would love to know the total cost if that's not being to personal.
now this is what I'm talking about. A real hack, not just a paint job!
ReplyDeleteHow about some indirect lighting to make use of that gap near the top?
ReplyDeleteLooks fantastic, you need a trim board at the top to make it look completely built-in.
ReplyDeleteanother note, Where do people get these MASSIVE bedrooms? I think your bedroom is larger than my living room.
That looks great! I also think the addition of trim or molding would really complete the built-in look, and then no more dusting!
ReplyDeleteAlso, I am pretty sure that bedroom is bigger than my apartment!

Gorgeous, gorgeous, gorgeous. You have great taste!
ReplyDeletewow this is exactly what I've been looking for..
ReplyDeletethinking about tackling this project.
thanks for adding the projects ...
This is fabulous! I hate the little peg holes too.
ReplyDeleteFantastic and creative! Very inspiring!
ReplyDeleteI don't see the doors on the Ikea website...they only have sliding doors. Are these from another shelving unit?
ReplyDeleteOops! So Sorry, guess I just needed to look a bit harder cause I found them. BTW...awesome hack...luv it!
ReplyDeleteThis is a beautiful, well thought out and classy piece of workmanship.
ReplyDeleteThese look really good and stylish. You would never guess they were from Ikea and give the impression that they have been constructed by a real pro. Some excellent DIY - I'm jealous, I'd just make a hash if it if I tried something like this.
ReplyDeleteWow! MAJOR "Schrank-i-tude".
ReplyDeleteYou did a great job with those!
(and I echo an earlier comment wondering where people get bedrooms the size of my whole apartment.)
I'm assuming this place isn't a rental (it would be a bitch to move all this built-in cabinetry) therefore it would be a good idea to seal off the top using some wood trim. (like a very short trim - painted either white to blend with the ceiling or painted black-brown) That would also solve the problem of having to dust up there.
ReplyDeleteAre these anchored to the wall somehow? I am just wondering about the safety issue.

ReplyDeleteI agree with everyone that the new wardrobes look really nice, but as a few other people pointed out, that gap at the top of the "built-ins" really stands out. Putting trimming or some sort of filler in that space, in my humble opinion, would make a great project look stunning. Anything that would help make it look permanent, really.
ReplyDeleteQuite impressive, that looks amazing!

ReplyDeleteLooks great. I'm about to do a similar (but much smaller) version of a PAX tv/storage unit, but i'm worried about the weight limit of the shelves for our tv. Yours looks about the same size, but when I asked at IKEA the max load for a shelf is only 44 lbs. tv weighs 53lbs. Any tips?
ReplyDeleteLooks great--how is this holding up? How much weight do the shelves/drawers hold?
ReplyDeletePeople commenting on size--4 full size wardrobes fit in 13 foot room which is only a little bigger than typical bedroom.
