She says, "I used the basic Ikea Regolit lampshade (just the paper globe) in the medium size ($5), and a package of tissue paper from Target ($1.99).Starting at the bottom, I cut strips of tissue paper into a fringe and just glued around and around till I got to the top! It looks pretty outer-spacey or deep sea. Connecting it to the ceiling fixture in my room was a little challenging, but involved 3 binder clips and some wire - I wanted to make sure it was far enough from the bulb to not catch fire.
All you need is a shag carpet!

ReplyDeleteThis is really cool! I'll have to try it. I've done a lot with those lamp shades over the years, mainly with tissue paper. Never thought of doing a fringe, looks really nice!

Re light temperatures... maybe all these people are using compact fluorescent bulbs, which use less energy and put out a lot less heat. I have a cardstock paper shade directly on a 13 watt CFL and have had no scorching, let alone burning.

ReplyDeleteIt is pretty far from the bulb (for those of you worriers), the bulb is about in the middle of it, and I AM using a CFL bulb - even it it's on for a long time, it doesn't really get hot inside.
ReplyDeleteIt's attached to a standard ceiling, screw in light fixture (the kind that usually has a glass globe on it). The fixture has three screws (for attaching the globe). I unscrewed them halfway, put the lampshade over the fixture, reached up through and attached the binder clips to the screws, so the brace against the top of the shade. Secured them with the wire that comes with the lampshade.
Whole project took less than two hours to do, probably another half hour to totally dry.
