Spin it with some colour

A dash of colour adds some zing to the Expedit. Steve’s Expedit vinyl station is definitely looking hot.

He says, “I’ve put this together over the last few weeks. It’s an Expedit bookshelf that’s modified for use as my turntable listening station. I ordered fire engine red contact vinyl from Ebay and covered the inner shelves (my skills from years of gripping skateboards came in handy). The lights are Ikea Dioders (I still have to clean up the wiring) and those are 6″ Capita legs on the bottom. I’m pretty happy with it.

The only thing I’d do differently the next time around is to use automotive grade vinyl rather than contact paper vinyl. The heavy automotive vinyl is a little more difficult to cut but it’ll hold up better over time and is available in many different colors.

See more of Steve’s vinyl station on flickr.

This is great! Did you build the unit first before applying? Would you do the same with the automotive vinyl?

This is fantastic. I was just about to put my ugly brown Expedit on Craigslist and at the last minute checked to see how I could reinvent it — looks like it’s got life in it yet – as an end table behind the couch. Thanks!

Try to use particle board screws, the threads are thicker and may hold better. Also, drill a pilot hole before drilling the screws in.

need some help… im trying a similar hack… how did you drill the holes for the legs? since the wood is hollow, mine keep giving out causing the unit to fall down?

is there a secret im missing?

Your prized turntable and receiver placed in front of the sink area? If any water spills or splashes on it while playing while on….? That could be a safety hazard.

  9. Well done! I didn’t even recognize it at first. The red on the inside is key.

Thanks, i used vinyl contact paper which is usually used to line drawers. Thicker automotive/sign maker vinyl is of a thicker mil and is used for wrapping cars with advertisement and making signs.
