A must-have jewelry organizer

Monique debuts with a jewelry organizer. Just a simple tweak and the Atran bathroom cabinet becomes a jewelry storage cabinet. I'm loving it.

She says, "My Ikea hack, the first one so far, is of an Atran bathroom cabinet. I needed something to store away my jewelry, more specifically earrings. I wanted something that would conceal them away from my sight, but at the same time that I could easily see them all easily.

A cabinet was the solution but I couldn't find anything affordable that had the sleek look I was going for. So, on one of my trips to Ikea I found this Atran cabinet that was everything I was looking for, the color was perfect, the sleekness... the shelves inside. I wanted something that if my earrings fell, they wouldn't go flying around, something would hold it so they wouldn't fall on the floor, that's where the little shelves came into play. I bought two and put them side by side, used kabob sticks I had around the house to make those mini rods to hang my earrings, bracelets etc from. I attached them to the cabinets with magnets since the cabinet is metal and I wanted something completely removable and that wouldn't harm the piece.

I used industrial glue to attach those little beads. By doing that I was able to attach the 2 magnets together so they would be able to hold the kabob sticks in between them and at the same time stay a little flexible to fit on the doors and also to save money by using things i already had around the house, like the glue, the string of beads, kabob sticks and some magnets.

It's really functional and I'm very happy with it."

Update! Here are more close up photos from Monique.

  1. Love, Love, Love It!!! I can't wait to duplicate it. But I'm not understanding your reference to "beads" and how you attached the kabob sticks. Can you take a more detailed picture of this? Or maybe explain it more fully for my not so comprehending brain? Thanks! And...you nailed that one!

  2. I really love your hack. even if I don't have so much earrings, i think it's great way to display them.I just don't understand how you hanged those mini rods...maybe a close-up picture will'be useful :) Lad

  3. I ~think~ I get how the beads are used. It looks like you glued the beads to the magnets (which stick to the walls), and the beads serve as a "handle" on which you set the kabob sticks. Is that it? The project looks great, very organized and clever.

  5. I love it! A miniature closet for earrings!

I'm not sure how Monique did it, but this is how I would do it: I would buy beads with an inner hole diameter sufficient to insert the skewer, glue the bead to the magnet with the hole facing straight out, and then glue the skewer into the bead. Then I would cut the skewer to length and repeat the assembly steps for the other end. Looks like she finished everything with a coat of black spray paint.

If you wanted to hang necklaces, I think you could do the same trick with small cup hooks or tiny nails with heads.

Beautiful hack, Monique, and you have an enviable earring collection, too!

  6. That looked really awesome and professional too. I think the cabinet even surpassed some shelves at certain jewelry stores in beauty and looks!

  7. You may even be able to find magnets with holes in the middle, and skip the bead step entirely. Otherwise, I'd follow Keter's suggestion.

  8. Great Hack!! I too will be adding this - since its easy to take off the walls if we ever move. What an awesome idea. I wasn't understanding the bead thing until I saw the up close photos. I too envy (in a nice way) your earring collection
    Thanks for posting this.

  11. The way you used the magnets, kabob sticks, and beads is really clever. I bought an old medicine cabinet the other day that has a louvered door for something similar. The case is plastic so I'll either have to find another old case or come up with something else besides magnets. I guess something told me this hack was about to bust out!

  14. This is a really cool idea. I had been stuffing my Jewerly into a Jewerly hanger and finding pieces that had fallen on the floor. Great job with creativity!

  15. This hack came out fantastic! It looks great on my wall, has more than enough space, and was fairly inexpensive to put together. LOVE IT! I added a cherry blossom vinyl decal to the front doors for a little color and detail and it came out fantastic. Thanks for the idea Monique, I am more than thrilled with how it came out!

That is a fantastic idea. It looks great also. Many people are to lazy to do anything if they can't find exactly what they want.

  17. The way the magnets are used from what I can tell in the pics is two magnets are put side by side and this creates an indent in the center above the two magnets where you can rest the kabob skewer. That way it is removable so you can easily add your jewelry with out having to open and close bracelets and watches on the rod in the cabinet. You just take out the rod slide your things off and put the rod back. Cool idea I am going to make one too!!

  18. Amazing, I love your new bathroom cabinet. It looks very good with all the jeweleries inside. I don't have a cabinet for my jewelry. I'm using jewelry stands. But they really bored me, I'm thinking to change them next weekend.

  19. I love this!! Is there any point to the beads?! It looks like they're useless. Decoration?
