The door stoppers are aluminium rubber-tipped door stoppers and fixed to the bottom of a Lack wall shelf using the screws provided. It also happens to be the perfect snuggle height for his DVD recorder and sound system.

Door stoppers as legs for computer shelf
Brian stumbled upon the above entry when he was looking for a monitor stand to use in conjunction with his laptop.
"I stole most of the idea from "Scott's Lack TV Shelf".
Hensvik Ikea Shelf - $9.99
4 Door Stoppers - $12.00
before
after
It took about 10 minutes to measure and then screw in the 4 door stoppers! Super easy and cheap project!"

I bought door stoppers at Home Depot tonight buth they're the kind you put on the hinge. This is really too cool. What a great idea.
ReplyDeleteNice idea. However, make sure the devices got enough cool air, otherwise they may overheat. Electronic things like some free space around them!
ReplyDeleteWow, a beautiful piece. I wish my components were not as high as they are.
ReplyDeleteYou can get more clearance by using Ikea Capita legs instead of the door stoppers.
ReplyDeleteYES! We use the same shelf for our flatscreen and need a space for our new Sony blu-ray player (they're long).
ReplyDeleteGreat hack!

ReplyDeleteWhere did the door stops come from? Ikea as well?
ReplyDeleteThat's not a LACK shelf. The LACK shelf is 6 feet wide- take a look at the Ikea site. I also own the shelf.
ReplyDeleteWhere do you find those door stoppers? I can't find them on the ikea site.
ReplyDeleteKids, very cool offering, but that is so last weekend for me. Our office did this over the weekend prior to this article, honest!
ReplyDeletePS: save yourself $2 dollars and a trip to the hardware store, and buy EVERYTHING at IKEA instead:
Capita (/4 pack) 4"Legs=$10; 6"Legs =$12; 8"Legs=$14

Best of all, they look like they belong with Ikea products...because they are.
Notes about Lack Wall shelves...
Straight shelves come in 2 lengths: 74.75" & 43.25"
(respectively: http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/60103750
&

BE CAREFUL about placement of Capita legs, as Lack is constructed from masonite, particleboard and essentially a corrugated cardboard core-this has limited places to screw into. If you want your screws to stick pay attention to placement
Go get em!

This project uses the Hensvik shelf. The Lack shelve from the TV project may have been cut?
ReplyDeletehmmm ... I guess people have different preferences, but to me the mac picture presents a bum deal, going from a dual screen setup to a single one. Or does this Mac not to dual?
ReplyDeleteAside from that, a nice hack, I've been thinking of various ways to a DIY laptop stand for a while. I'm keeping this one in mind.
Btw which table is that?????
ReplyDeleteNeat idea! As others have said, Ikea Capita legs also work well if you want more clearance. They have hard plastic feet instead of rubber, so I used stick-on felt furniture pads from Kroger to keep them from scratching my desk.
ReplyDeleteAlso, any old shelf or desktop will do. I used a small half-circle Galant desktop to match my Galant desk.
ReplyDeleteYeah, Osten shelf works well too. Same size/shape as Hensvik, but it's made of particleboard and sells for $5.
ReplyDeleteIf you're using the shelf for a workstation, you may also want to check out the As-Is section for cabinet doors and other random pieces of wood to use as your shelf. I got a nice finished piece for only $3.99 and finished it with the Capita legs. Saved a bundle!
ReplyDeletehey, great idea just made my own here are the pics:

I also used Capita legs with a shelf out of the discarded parts section:

My desk is nowhere as neat though...
Will somebody puhlease point out the exact door stoppers used for me? I just cannot find them online (UK site is best for me please). Whatever I search on, I cannot locate them.
ReplyDeleteYes, I have noted the Capita comments, that's an option, but I just want to check the stoppers out.
Cheers,
jon.
Jon the door stoppers are not from Ikea. Just get some from your hardware store.
ReplyDeleteThanks Jules. That wasn't clear from the original post.
ReplyDeleteI am shocked, SHOCKED, that somebody let's a non-Ikea product into their life... :)
Great idea. Any thoughts on how to attach the Capita legs to a glass shelf (e.g., KOMPLEMENT) ?
ReplyDeletewould it work to hold a 50lb tv? I plan on using a 23in x 19in shelf from the Kullen wardrobe that i didnt use. Its the perfect size to place my tv on, but I cant seem to think of ways to fit my dvd under. any ideas?
ReplyDeleteNot sure about the door stoppers but I know that Capita Legs and definitely hold 50lbs. I have a 37" LCD sitting on it and I'd say it weighs roughly 50lbs.
ReplyDeletethanks for the tip, we used the capita legs with the hensvik and working perfectly! Total kost (here in Belgium, Europe): 18euro.
ReplyDeleteFor about £15 I got four Capita legs and a Lack wall shelf. Now I have a really handy shelf to put speakers, laptop and other things under, as well as elevating my monitors which I needed doing anyway!
ReplyDeleteThanks so much for the inspiration.
I have a frosted glass computer table and matching frosted piece of glass I want to use as a shelf. Does anyone know what i could get to use for legs to hold up my shelf?
ReplyDeleteThis is a fantastic idea, I've been looking for something like this but haven't been able to find anything suitable.
ReplyDeleteI'll be giving this bad boy a go!
Wow, very nice! I was looking at some retail shelf risers going for over $100! What a ripoff! This solution is great and will look much better. Thanks!
ReplyDeleteWhat a great idea. I've been searching for a DIY monitor stand, that will give me enough room to slide my keyboard, under the monitor. This should do the trick. Thank you.
ReplyDeleteThanks so much for the awesome idea! I've been trying to come up with a solution for a bit and yours is perfect. Thanks again for posting such a great idea.
ReplyDeleteI found a STUVA MALAD drawer front (23x12) in the as-is department and I think it works really well for a monitor stand. Just about the right size and the handle cut-out provides some cable management in the back:

#Glasstable_hack: I'd suggest legs like Capita that have a decent mounting surface, then use "Rear View Mirror Adhesive", as found in automotive stores or online.
ReplyDelete*note this stuff is not very shelf-stable. If the package looks old or beat up, leave it alone.
Examples are " Permatex 81844 " or "LocTite 37438 "
You don't need much adhesive as long as the mating surfaces are clean and smooth.
Where you already have the table frame, I'd suggest checking how many mounts were used before. Use one adhesive package for each mount point.
