It's an Expedit bookcase and a Vika Amon tabletop. Gorilla Glue together, keeping one side flush and the other side hang over, and voila! A kitchen island.
And funny enough, the Franklin folding chair fits perfectly with this hack."

ReplyDeleteI'd be interested to hear how sturdy this is with just the glue. I'd op for screws drilled from the underside to add some security.
But over all, not bad. You could even add some legs to it to get it up off the floow.
And hey, those Franklin folding chairs aren't half bad. Granted, I never fold mine, and I'm not sure what repeated folding would do to the plastic hardware, but they are a cheap option if you need a tall chair.
Very good idea, not only as island, good idea next to the wall also.

Might there be tippage problems with this hack? I can't imagine an Expedit is wide enough to prevent the whole thing from crashing over when you put your elbows up on it.

Looks nice, but I wouldn't put any heavy shopping bags on the end there. I'd be a little scared of it tipping or the top separating.

a friend of mine uses the expedit as an TV stand and it works fine. they have a normal sized TV, an older type . I'm gonna use it this way as well.

1. It's a cell phone pic, my lens isn't dirty.
2. Banker's boxes... I'm poor, and that's what I've got. Obviously, you can do whatever you'd like.
3. It's really sturdy. I've stood on the main section of it, and didn't go anywhere.
4. Tipping, not so much... I've put really heavy grocery bags on the end and it hasn't gone anywhere.
5. Separation would only happen if you don't put enough glue.
6. Short... yes. I'm only 5ft tall. Most kitchen islands are too tall for me. You can always put legs on yours to raise it up.
If you are thinking about this hack, I would suggest to put some plexiglass on the top. Water damage can be a problem when you have a boyfriend that doesn't use coasters.

ReplyDeletecool idea, im going to be taking two or three inexpensive book shelves units that are 31.5 inches tall and add a kick bases made out of 2x4's on to the bottom, and use some thin strips of wood to attach all three together in the shape of a u ot I then i am goingto take some laminate wood that is able to be stained and glue and drill it to the top of the three book, this project is going to cost about 87.00 if that. it will be a nice kitchen island for my new apartment!
