Rustic flooring for the bathroom

Chris saves his pink bathroom with some outdoor decking. It turns out pretty good, with an almost rustic 'spa' look.

He says, "The wife and I just moved into a new rental, and it was perfect, except for the bathroom: pink countertop, sink, tub, and toilet. Even worse, the floor was 1960's era church-kitchen linoleum (white and beige and brown random shaped flecks). It was really cold after getting out of the shower, and was just ugly as hell. Obviously, since we don't own the place, putting down better permanent flooring wasn't an option, but I definitely wanted to do something. Strolling the maze at Ikea one day, I stumbled across the Platta (can't find the link on Ikea's website) outdoor decking. It's $7 for each 18 inch section. Obviously, the bathroom floor isn't a rectangle in multiples of 18 inches, so I borrowed a jigsaw and some expertise, and this is the result.

Apparently, though, Ikea says that this wood (acacia) is only for outdoor use, since the color can leech out and stain whatever it's on. So I put down some clear visqueen first."

  1. I created something similar but I just didn't go all the way to the edges. It is more like a really big bath rug 4' x 6' maybe?

I needed a way to pick up it and clean underneath easily.

I like how the wood floor feels on your feet though.

  3. that is insanely clever!

my only concern is that it would stain your feet. does it?

  5. I had the exact same idea when I saw that flooring at ikea recently. How do you plan to clean it?

  6. That's going to collect water underneath and rot everything if you live there for awhile. Be careful.

  8. Well done! And such a good idea I voluntarily want to use it for our bathroom with a floor cover of extreme ugliness.
One question: How did you manage to make the door move over the panels?

  9. That is one great floor! Clever use for the Platta- which is only at ikea Seattle in late spring to early summer. Nice way to re-do a rental!

  10. OMG! I *LOVE* this for a bathroom floor! I'd love to see follow up notes on how it does with moisture underneath after a shower, etc. But, it looks lovely!

  11. So how do you deal with the little crumbs of bathroom detritus that will inevitably work their between the slats? If you can see the subfloor, you can lose Q-tips and hairballs down there.

  12. This is super cute! My husband and I will be moving soon, if we get stuck with a scary bathroom floor, I may consider this!

  13. It looks like the slats have spaces in between them -- if so, how do you clean underneath it?

  14. that is an excellent idea...looks awesome!

  15. looks great! Not too crazy about the pink and brown together, but I get that wasn't his choice here. (I mean, who wants a pink toilet, seriously...)

I'm curious to know if there becomes a problem with mildew or mold, however, since you can't really clean the floor unless you pull the tiles up. Is that the plan?

  16. Great hack! And a smart solution for a rental property that doesn't look "jerry-rigged".

  17. It looks nice but I guess you would have to pick up all of the panels to clean under it?

  18. Yeah, it can definitely pick up a good amount of dirt if we're not careful, so I just pick up the tiles every once in awhile and sweep up.

Also had one instance where water got underneath the visqueen and grew a little bit of mold, but it was cleaned up no problem.

  20. oooohhhh what a fabulous idea!!

  21. Well this looks good but I'm not sure how practical it is. A much cheaper solution would have been to simply buy some peel and stick vinyl tile.

  22. Looks great! I'm planning on doing the same. For those living in Europe there is also one from the Molger series which is suited for the bathroom. http://www.ikea.com/gb/en/catalog/products/00051301
