Idoia found the Sandnes shoe cabinet with 4 compartments (pix, right) too large for her space and decided to hack it into half.She says, "It is the Sandnes shoe cabinet with 4 comparment (37 3/4 x 35 3/8") [link to a vertical version, which hey, could have saved Idoia the hacking!] but it was too big for my hall entry (if you can call this small space a hall. I cut it, painted it in black and made a little decoupage on the corners so it looked kind of old."

usually you just need to apply a bonding primer to the surface. lightly sand before hand. once that's on, I'd use a semi-gloss to gloss enamel (more gloss = more durability) to paint the color of choice.

ReplyDeleteHi everybody, I am really happy to see this "hack" posted... It is great to read your comments. I would try to find the name of the paint I used so I can tell you, but I basically sand it lightly and paint over with a semi-gloss to gloss enamel. The vertical version of this cabinet was way to high for the space I had. I bought the clawfoot legs in a bricolage store and painted them (they were like 3 dolars each) I put a beautiful (and really retro) mirror over it and now it looks perfect, the rest of the apartment is kind of modern so this is an interesting contrast. Hope I could show more images...
