Idoia found the Sandnes shoe cabinet with 4 compartments (pix, right) too large for her space and decided to hack it into half. She says, "It is the Sandnes shoe cabinet with 4 comparment (37 3/4 x 35 3/8") [link to a vertical version, which hey, could have saved Idoia the hacking!] but it was too big for my hall entry (if you can call this small space a hall. I cut it, painted it in black and made a little decoupage on the corners so it looked kind of old."

LOVE it!!!
ReplyDeleteReally nice.
ReplyDeleteI have one question, how did she manage to paint over veneer? What paints should I use to paint it?
Yes! please do tell how you painted over the veneer!!!
ReplyDeleteThis is awesome, I love that cabinet and don't have the room for it either.
ReplyDeleteSee this thread and comments for tips about painting laminate: http://www.apartmenttherapy.com/ny/good-questions/good-questions-is-it-easy-to-paint-ikea-furniture-036937
usually you just need to apply a bonding primer to the surface. lightly sand before hand. once that's on, I'd use a semi-gloss to gloss enamel (more gloss = more durability) to paint the color of choice.
ReplyDeleteDoes anyone know where to get those clawfoot legs? It doesn't look like something IKEA would sell.
ReplyDeleteYes! As Anonymous above, I really like the clawfoot legs!

ReplyDeleteNice hack though the collor doesn`t seem to go with the wall color.its kinda retro.Original color would have looked better.

Great hack! (And it goes perfectly with the wall.)
ReplyDelete@ Linh Bui: color does't go with the wall?
ReplyDeleteHi everybody, I am really happy to see this "hack" posted... It is great to read your comments. I would try to find the name of the paint I used so I can tell you, but I basically sand it lightly and paint over with a semi-gloss to gloss enamel. The vertical version of this cabinet was way to high for the space I had. I bought the clawfoot legs in a bricolage store and painted them (they were like 3 dolars each) I put a beautiful (and really retro) mirror over it and now it looks perfect, the rest of the apartment is kind of modern so this is an interesting contrast. Hope I could show more images...
ReplyDeleteI like how it goes with the wall!
ReplyDeleteWhat an absolutely brilliant idea. Mine was an unwanted piece of furniture but now that I've seen your idea I am going to do the same - and I have a space where it will fit perfectly. Thank you.
