Christie’s version of the Cellula Chandelier
She says, “I have long coveted the Cellula Chandelier from Design Within Reach (pic right) … (with it’s $2200 price tag it was out of the question). I found the Glimt at Ikea and crafted my own version of the Cellula that is pretty darn close. Below are photos of an up close of my version, and a glimpse of it hanging in my room!

What I did to make it:
1) Bought the 6 light Glimt for $79.99
2) Assembled the light, omitting the glass shades that cover the bulbs
3) Scoured Ebay for crystals in various sizes (I bought a couple big lots of them all for less than $100)
4) Used clear fishing line to hang the crystals at various lengths

Modified GLIMT

The Glimt is meant to be a low hanging table chandelier, so I did have to do some surgery to the electrical wires that hang the fixture to get it as close to the ceiling as I have it hanging.

i need to find really cheap crystals they are so expensive

  4. merathon says:

this one is also a MUCH cheaper option than the DWR one: http://www.overstock.com/Home-Garden/Linear-5-light-38-inch-Bar-Pendant-Crystal-Chandelier/4272860/product.html

i was very happy with it– of course i never knew about the ikea hack option!

  5. Tanya says:

Christie I like your version! I had to pack my version away as we’ve moved to a home where it just doesn’t work. I am now wondering what to do with all my crystals!?

Ammy A- no i didn’t keep my glass shades, sorry!

  6. Amy A says:

Hi Tanya and Christie – beautiful lights! Do either of you still have the original light shades? I’ve broken one and would love to buy a replacement. Unfortunately, ikea doesn’t sell the shades separately. thanks!

  8. I. Love it.

I am restoring a 1930s home and this is going to be the perfect touch of glam above the mirror in my half-bath.

I’m totally going to do this.

    Thank you!

I think if you used plastic silverware with halogen bulbs you’d either have a big mess to clean up or a fire to put out.

    Just saying…

    I love this cellula hack.

    Great job!

  10. Jenna says:

Christy, could you tell me how you trimmed the wires? Did you just use a wire cutter and tie knots in the ends to keep it in place? This light hangs so low that it’s eye level and not pleasant. Thanks!

Sorry but this is absolutely hideous. Maybe you should use it as a towel rack

    Great job!

This would look pretty made with colored sea glass too.

I’ve seen the real chandeliers in a window display in a cupcake shop in Tacoma and always thought that the crystals were clear plastic cutlery. Well, they’re not, but those would look just as good and would be a whole lot cheaper than crystals on eBay.

I’ve seen the plastic cutlery thing on a different chandelier: http://www.studioverissimo.net/spoon.htm

That’s what I’d do…thanks for the Ikea hack, though!

I just saw this hack on Color Splash last night (well, that’s when I watched the recorded version :) ) and was wondering where to find something similar.

Thanks for posting such simple solution. Nice work Tanya!

Tanya, I LOVE your beautiful chandelier. I found affordable lead crystals of all shapes and sizes at the big Tucson Gem, Mineral, and Fossil shows (in Feb). I once saw a comment by someone who had purchased the Cellula chandelier, and he said when it arrived it was practically a DIY anyway, even to stringing the crystals.

  16. Tanya says:

i got the crystals off ebay, not from ikea.

  17. Vladimir says:

    The crystals are very expensive

  18. Anonymous says:

FYI the crystals are also from IKEA and very inexpensive

  19. OMG I was asking my friends to find me a Cellula linear chandelier within my budget for years. I love this and I cannot wait to go to Ikea and make my own cellula chandelier!!

    Thanks for sharing!!!

  20. MandyPandy says:

I saw something similar that was featured in the NY Times a while back. The chandeliers looked far more colorful and attractive, but cost thousands of dollars.

  21. M2JL says:

Well done. It looks a lot like the real one!

I saw a similar light fixture at DWR, costing around $1350. This looks virtually identical! Nice hack!

    Here is the expensive version:

  23. Wow!!! so nice indeed!

World’s largest IKEA is just a stone throw from where I live. So, I guess I go and grab one there §:-))

I love this! I saw a similar looking light fixture at Design Within Reach a few years ago and even gathered old chandelier crystals off Ebay but could never figure out exactly how to make it work.
After seeing this I am off to Ikea!
    Thanks for sharing Tanya!

  25. Mackie says:

i love it! i think it even looks better than the ones you can buy … and they are expensive.

  26. Chen says:

Wow, what a difference! It went from “unnoticeable” to “Arrragh, my eyes! It hurts my eyes!!!”

  27. Anonymous says:

love it! beautiful and it looks high-end!

  28. prue says:

it looks great – but aren’t these crystals, whether antique or not, quite pricey?

still, as i am still looking for a kitchen lamp (to be placed over a counter), it wouldn’t be ideal for me anyway (just think of cleaning these from kitchen grease…..)

love the look, though! (and i don’t particularly like the glimt lamp otherwise).

People like different things, but in my opinion this is rather ugly…
