kathleen created an "instant attic," courtesy of ikea's gorm shelves, which somehow fitted her old-style high ceiling 1920s house perfectly. the shelves rest on the molding snugly. two gorm shelves which cost her a total of $19 are used to create the additional space and they are plenty sturdy for holding bulky storage items like blankets and sleeping bags.

sophia decides to give the lack shelving unit a little lift. she scoured the internet for brushed chrome, tubular, coffee table legs and found them on tablelegsonline.com. heck, the legs cost more than the shelf... but it looks much better.

Legs for the Lack - why didn't you just buy the legs from Ikea? The ones shown look exactly like the ones that came with my kitchen cabinets!

my understanding is that aside from the border edges (which i mounted mine on - each of the 4 corners), the base is just hollow particleboard and those legs would rip right out

the instant attic is a great idea - I would paint them white to blend in better though.

A long time ago I saw a display that used those exact legs--they look great, and I've always wondered where to find them. But WOW! What's up with the prices on those things?

ReplyDeleteWould anyone happen to know how much weight the shelving unit can take when it's on the side like in this hack? I would think it could be an effective TV bench and with the four holes holding A/V equipment, it'd work.

I was trying to remake Andy's magnetic kitchen utensils hanger, but I'm having issues keeping the grundtal 20" rod up. Any ideas? Is there something I'm missing?

ReplyDeleteI just went tonite and bought the grundtal rod and magnetic strip for andy's hackea. I've been trying to figure out what to do with my 20+ cooking utensils for a long time and this works great!
ReplyDeleteThat is so pretty! I especially love the kitchen utensil holder! How ingenious! Right now mine are all in a pitcher on the counter, and things are always getting stuck together and tangled, it gets frustrating! I'll look into what you did, thanks!
