we looked at the table-tops at the ikea, as an alternative. we got vika byske in oak. (it's very well made, but it needs to be oiled or polished)it was installed right on top of the old column, screwed in from the bottom up. it looks great!

Very cool.If you are looking to make it a water safe surface there is a product called Waterlox that is very easy to apply and seals the top perfectly. You won't be able to use it as a butcher block surface but it's basically maintenence free and food safe. I have used on my island top (ikea, as well) and couldn't be happier.

ReplyDeleteJust make sure your 1/2 wall is sturdy enough before you start a project like this. If it was not built to actually hold something up, this might be too much strain.
ReplyDeleteWe've put (so far) 3 coats of Danish Oil. Wood is startig to look and feel good. I would recommend to use Danish even if you use this table tops for your computer desk. It does not leave it greasy and it's very easy to apply.
