a hanging display shelf

this is the first time i've seen the lack shelf hung from the ceiling. a neat idea from perkin, though i'll worry about knocking those candles over.

hanging display shelfto create this shelf suspended from the ceiling, i attached four cup hooks to the side of the lack shelf (2 on each long-side). then i screwed in 4 ceiling hooks. i used toggle bolts so the shelf could take a lot of weight. the ceiling hooks were spaced exactly the same as the cup hooks. i bought some white chains from home depot and connected the hooks. i used white so it would be less noticeable against the white wall, but they also have nice metal ones if you want a more industrial look.

hanging display shelfhanging display shelfi ended up filling the shelf with candles of varying heights but it can definitely hold heavier things like books. i really enjoy the dramatic look when all the candles are lit. i did this about a year ago and have recently moved, so it's all dismantled."

  1. This is awesome! I'm already trying to think of where I could do this in my place!

  3. The hooks you use in the shelf itself should be at least as strong as the hooks used in the ceiling... as both will be supporting weight. That's a neat idea and good job, but the little screw-in hooks in the shelf seem a tad weak to me.

  6. It looks amazing! My first though, though, was "holy poo their cat is going to set the house on fire."

At least that's what my cat would do.

  7. i'd be afraid of the cup hooks turning and chain slipping off. perhaps using a hook that attaches to the shelf w/ two screws would prevent that from happening.

  8. Standby for molten wax dripping into the back of the television in 5... 4... 3... 2...

  9. Yes. The TV stand is indeed just the LACK coffee table.

The cup hooks are pretty sturdy actually. You really have to force it if you want the hooks to twist.

  10. This might look a little bit sleeker using the deka curtain wire instead of the chain.

  11. Wow! That is pretty but makes me SO, SO nervous about fire!!! Please, consider putting flowers or something on that instead!

  12. I love the design but like the others, those hooks worry me. One easy way to make it a lot stronger would be to drill holes through the top of the shelf. Then use "Eye Bolts" instead, and "Screw Lock Rings" to attach the chain to the Eye Bolts. That way there will be nothing that can slip which could easily happen if someone bumps it from the underside.

Also, as far as candle wax, adding a small raised edge to the edge of the shelf would solve that problem.
