a baroque bathroom cabinet from eleanor. love the glossy black and gold trim."i started with the bjorken mirror bathroom cabinet which i attached an inreda lamp to. i then decided that it really didn't match my bedroom which is kind of baroque. so i decided to paint it.
i started by sanding it down a bit then priming it then painting the cabinet with 2 coats of really glossy black paint. i then taped off about a quarter inch area and painted that gold.
i know the lamp should be bronze of something but i haven't got around to changing that yet. overall a very pretty vanity though."

ReplyDeleteI don't normally respond to unneeded sarcasm on web blogs, but I've had a bit too much caffeine this morning and the urge to type a response to you and your comments became overwhelming.
First of all, I think you're a bit confused.
You have complained that a few projects shown here are not true "hacking". As it turns out your right. In fact, the literal definition of "hacking" as we've come to know it is : The unauthorized use, or attempts to circumvent or bypass the security mechanisms of an information system or network
Now, until IKEA releases a line of LACK Unix servers or a STOCKHOLM laptop literally "hacking" anything IKEA is a bit hard to do.
So I guess NO ONE on this site has really hacked anything.
But the site isn't about literally "hacking" and I think you know that. It's a forum for "modding" and altering IKEA furniture that happens to use "hacking" in it's title because, well, it's a catchy name.
What you are (I believe) actually complaining about is the scope and breadth of some of the mods shown.
Unfortunately, some people don't need to turn their Vika Anon desk into a dune buggy or lunar lander. Some people just need a nicer looking toy chest for their daughter.
Sure, it's a good read when someone takes a $10 IKEA lamp and "mods" it into a sofa bed / autoharp, but sometimes it's just the small changes some people make that spark bigger ideas in others.
In short, genius does not form in a vacuum and you judging the value of a project simply by its complexity is immature at best and harmful to the overall community at worst.

waiting to be wowed
This isn't actually a comment, just a question for other people on this site (LOVE the site, by the way): Where do you all find the space to do this stuff? I've seen so many things that made me think, "wow, that would be a great storage solution for my teeny apartment," but precisely because I have a teeny apartment, I lack room for a power saw, workbench, etc. Do you do all this on the living room floor? Are you such dedicated woodworkers that you have devoted a big chunk of scarce space to a work area? I dream of someone opening a communal wood shop in DC called "My Dad's Garage" or something... but I imagine the insurance premiums would be through the roof...
