a cheap temporary 'sofa'

kevin from toronto gives us this foldable temporary sofa solution.

"just got into my first condo and bought a new sofa. did not realize it was going to be a 6 to 8 week wait for it. so i asked myself what would be the cheapest way to have a temporary sofa... 4 jeff chairs tied together!

cheap sofatemporary sofadiy sofamy tag line for it is the only new 'sofa' for under $60 bucks canadian. note it would be under $40 in US of A. almost criminal if you think about it."

hey, it works for visitor waiting rooms too.

  1. You know - just to expand on this idea - you could put some batting on it and then cover it with a sofa slip cover - would make it a bit softer - more like a sofa to lay down on.

  2. Kevin, great idea. And where did you get that bookshelf, where the books are stacked vertically? Too cool.

  4. It looks very clean and I like it, but it don't look like a comfortable seat for 6 to 8 weeks. It gives us all more ideas for temporary seating, though. :)

  5. Nice to see an idea comming from the theaters (!) to the house.

We've used this trick to secure up to 6 mobile chairs in a row for fire requirements.

    Keep on your good work.

  6. Lol - nice hack! I think it'd be great for watching TV, but watching lord of the rings I think it might get a bit uncomfortable...

A few cushions and a throw would make it much more sofa-like without breaking the bank!

  7. Just discovered this site. Hooray for Ikea. They're opening in South Florida, finally. The Sunrise store should be ready very, very soon!

  9. nice how this avoids forking out cash for a (more useful) sofa when that bookshelf over there is like hundreds of dollars.

  10. bugga: Re-read the description - he's ordered a sofa, but it's going to take 6-8 wks to arrive, hence the use of this as a temporary solution.

  11. That side to side bookshelf looks like the sapien from DWR. I think a knockoff is available from cb2.

  12. Kevin, really great idea:) And how is your new sofa since then?
Otherwise it remembers me to the years I spent in school- how often we used this method to create temporary "bed" to sleep on during the lessons:)

  14. We did the loveseat (two-seater) version of this while waiting for our sofa, after we moved to a new country with no furniture. Definitely not comfortable for more than an hour.
