"after coveting numerous vintage mirrored tables ranging from $450 to $2500 on eBay and at other online sites, i decided to make my own using a 35" long ikea lack coffee table. while the cost for materials came out close to $200, i am really pleased with the results of my 'luxe' (it's all relative) lack hack.
i had the mirrors cut (with sanded edges) at a local shop and adhered them with liquid nails

this is one of the coolest hacks I've seen! now I want a mirrored "malm" dresser...
ReplyDeleteDang, even I have to comment on this one!! That is really impressive!
ReplyDeletethat's totally groovy!

whoa! i want one!
ReplyDeleteAwesome, the legs look invisible or something from maybe a mc escher.
ReplyDeleteMaybe this is a silly question, but does anyone know what kind of shop would carry and cut down mirrors like this? Not just your average hardward store, right? Should I try to find a glazier? Any thoughts?
ReplyDeleteThanks!
I just spoke with a glass & mirror company that can do the cutting for a very reasonable price. I was quoted $377 for cut mirror pieces to cover a 30"W x 80"L x 30"H table. This coffee table is great! What an inspiration. :)
ReplyDeleteYou are like the coolest ikea hacker ever!! I have a mirrored table that arrived broken on top and sides and I want to go out and buy custom mirrors like you did. I was also thinking about buying a sqaure desk with tons of drawers on each side, mirroring it and turning it into a vintagy art deco glam vanity! That might be too ambitious but your coffee table looks like you bought it in William Sonoma for $2000. Good job!!
ReplyDeletemy god this is EXACTLY what i have been looking for i want to do this with the Kullen dresser. Wish me luck
ReplyDeleteGood Job! I have been looking for exactly what you made! What I found was $800 and was still a bit too fussy looking. I tossed the idea around about making my own coffee table too....... now I can see that I can really make it and that it will look awesome! I hope Ikea 'buys' your idea from you (and quick so I can just buy it already done!).
ReplyDeleteQuick Question: would the mirrored coffee table (sides and legs) post a problem by showing your underware if not sitting with legs crossed? I was telling the parentals that I wanted to make the legs mirrored too and the above was their comment...... So, is it a problem?
ReplyDeleteThis question is half related to this hack. Which by the way, is so beautiful, wow! This entire site inspires me. I have been hacking Ikea for years, I wish I had photos of all the hacks I have done. I will start documenting from now on.
ReplyDeleteSo on to my question, do you think without any reenforcement the support shelf is necessary? Meaning could I build a LACK table (35wide version) and just not install the shelf and fill in with wood putty and paint? Or do you think the table would be too unstable?
i do think it will wobble. if you want to do without the shelf, some reinforcements (L brackets) to the top and legs would be a good idea.
ReplyDeletehey...saw this a month ago, think its totally gorg and fell in LOVE!
ReplyDeleteI've decided to do mine with the lack side tables instead...bought 2 used ones from NYC CL for 6 bucks!
Will be taking to a glazer soon and would love to post my results in the near future...wish me luck!!
Im super impressed with the site...keep up the good work!
If you don't want to or can't go to a glazier, you can get mirror finish plexiglass sheets and cut them yourself with a utility blade. You'll get a similar look.
ReplyDeleteI've seen the sheets available on eBay.
This is absolutely gorgeous! I was thinking about doing this to make mirrored cube accent tables. I'm not sure where to get the mirrors but now I'm rethinking all the expensive ones I've seen.
ReplyDeleteOn a side note, what kind of couch is this? I absolutely love it!
Has anyone actually used those plexiglass sheets to do a project like this? Im curious what it actually looks like if someone has can they post a pic of their item?
