one million stipple side table

this is one hack that made me go "OMG! how did she do it?" i marvel at mia's patience in stipple painting the ikea lack side table. i would have just painted 10 big dots and be done with it.

"i had a blue lack side table that was too plain, so i did a stipple painting on the top surface. this particular design took about 7 hours and each dot is approx. 1/8". my husband guesstimates there to be about a million dots. i have no idea - but it was fun!"

see more of mia's stipple table.

  1. I don't want to take away from the beauty of her work but there's no way there are a million dots on that table. Either that or it took way longer than 7 hours (1,000,000 dots over 7 hours is just less than 40 dots per second). Nevertheless, it's wonderful!

  4. This is incredible!! I love the way people can make really plain boring stuff (especially anything LACK, which I always say means SOMEthing... lack of quality, lack of creativity, lack of stability.. hahah the list goes on), but REALLY nice way of spicing up this table! You're making me want to do this to my white LACK shelf...

  5. I love this hack!
I see someone has commented already on the 1,000,000 dots impossibility... with 1/8" dot size the side of the table would have to be bigger than 135 inches.

  6. You guys are too funny -- the million dots was just a guess. I'm totally not smart enough to actually count all the dots. It was just fun.

Normally, I don't like repetitive stuff (like stipple art) but I do like projects that I can finish in a day. I am terrible about coming back to things. :)

  7. What kind of paint did you you to stick to a Lack surface? I want to use some paint stamps, but I'm not sure what type of paint will work with this finish, and to stamp on a design, I can't use primer first.
    Thanks~

  8. That is a very nice job. Must have taken lots of patience! If it was me, I would have gone for something smaller, like a beer mat.

Just for your interest, here is what 1,000,000 dots would have looked like:
