regan sent me this catstairs hack, inspired by katwallks.com and entries from apartment therapy's pet decor challenge.
"it's pretty self-explanatory and hardly hacky, but i had to share since i didn't see it on the site yet. it's cat stairs made of two sets of the cascading lack wall shelves, minus a few pieces (two in my case), and a lack side table, minus the legs.
to get this look, you'll want to flip the table upside down so that the unfinished side faces the ceiling. the amount of lack shelves you use will depend on the agility of your cat (how far off the ground you put the first step) and how high your ceiling is (the top of the landing on mine is at 70 inches and leaves just enough for a kitty to stretch without hitting the overhang).i used metal braces from the hardware store under each horizontal shelf and large brackets on the table, plus glued a corrugated cardboard slip guard to each step, to ensure any felines occupants would be coming down of their own accord. plus, since i didn't use two of the pieces from one of the lack shelves, now i have a matching mini side table, once i drill holes in the proper spots to attach the unused legs from the table."

This is awesome article and you give very good information this will help for every one. But we should take care when you adapt the pet because we may have faced some health problems because of these pets. so if we take the proper steps defiantly we will enjoy with our pets.

For those of you who don't know which shelf this is, it's probably b/c Ikea has been out of them for the past year.
ReplyDeleteMy store has recently restocked. All you have to do is type LACK in the search box and it will come up.
It is a zig-zag design that the poster simply put at an angle. The pic shows two shelves connected. It comes in white or red.

I am confused about the corrugated cardboard you used on the steps. How is it attached and where did you find it in white? Maybe you could post a close up picture of the steps. Thanks and Nice hacking. I am going to use this idea!
ReplyDeleteCan't give you a closeup at this point, since it's not on the stairs any longer b/c the room's occupied by a medical foster right now. I got them at a packaging store in San Antonio; they were originally intended as gift boxes. I cut them up and used white glue to attach them to the treads.
ReplyDeleteRegan, I love this stair thing and bought it at Ikea. Now tell me: what type of metal brackets did you use under each stair piece? L shaped? If so, how did they get attached to the "stairs", did you drill through the white laminate or glue or just "hang" them on the brackets while part of the L bracket is attached to the wall? Or is it a straight bracket under each platform? I can't figure out that part. I got the Ikea thing together, but I'm stuck at the "bracket" part. Thanks for the design. Great idea!

ReplyDeleteJane, I drilled the L bracket into the wall at the level so the shelf would rest on it. So the Ikea bits aren't actually attached to the L-brackets. They're just sitting on them.

ReplyDeleteIkea has discontinued the Zig Zag shelves. It would be more difficult but you could try and use the Expedit shelf insert.
