the forums were down for a bit last week due to a server upgrade. but it's up and running again.
on the matter of spam in the forums ... urgh ... i'm up to my eyeballs trying to keep them in check. spam bots are getting smarter by the minute. they now bypass user registration and even those graphic verification thingies which i currently have in place. i shudder to think what they will do next? take over the world?
me, a non-techie person and all, i need some ideas on how to get rid of them once and for all, if that is possible? or is there other forum / software / host that i should consider. any input much appreciated.

I saw an interesting video about how spambots "defeat" the graphics registration. Basically, when an spambot encounters a graphic, it sends the picture to a person. This person used to be low paid people in a foreign country. Now, the spambot operators align themselves with porn sites where a person must type in what they see in a graphic before being allowed to browse further. Neat huh?
ReplyDeleteMy blog only accepts comments from known people. When a new commentator sends his.her first message, the sender has to be approved before the person is able to comment in other posts.
ReplyDeleteAnother thing that works very well: I blocked all comments on posts older than two weeks (the old posts are the most affected by spam bots). It worked wonderfully.
another option is email verification. similar to what they have on craigslist and engadget.com
