"i wanted something long, linear, and floating on the wall, definitely not something connected/anchored to the floor. this provides great storage, at a height that is well above the normal dresser, it's a very comfortable height, it's close to 36" off the floor, the top of it. i had countertops left over from a previous project, so used those to put on top of the wardrobe (stolmen) cabinets. they are mahogany. there are holes at the top of the wardrobes, so a countertop is necessary to hide them.
it makes the room look huge, as it is very linear, and it's simple and useful, especially with the hand cutouts. i also considered stacking one above the other or using other combinations, but ended up with this combination. we love it. these are frequently out of stock, so you have to get them when you see them. they are supported with angle brackets on the inside, attached to studs in the wall. the cable tv box goes under the center wardrobe cabinet."other stolmen media storage hacks:

ReplyDeleteI love it! Can you give some more info about what you mean by "angle brackets on the inside?" Since these are drawers, I can't quite figure out how that would work.
ReplyDeleteWe got a 4 or 5" 90 degree angle bracket that you get from a hardware store and we used two brackets per drawer. They were mounted at the inside of the cabinet at the top of the cabinet, at the back.
ReplyDeleteThen, we put a 2x3 piece of wood on its side, which lays underneath the cabinet run. The cabinet sits on top of that at the rear.
The angle brackets were positioned, again, at the rear, and there is a part of the Ikea countertop which is solid, at the rear, and is about 1" solid from the back. We put long screws in that location to connect to the angle brackets and also silicone.
The angle brackets rest against the wall, and had to be cut through the rear of the Ikea cabinet because there is a 1/2" recess in the back of the cabinet.
I just went up and measured from the floor to the front of the cabinet and from the floor to the rear of the cabinet at the wall, to see if there is any sagging in the front, and the measurements were the same.
I will say that I do not have heavy things in these drawers. Light clothings, papers, things like that. After all, it's suspended 20" off the wall, which is quite far. Hope that helps!

Not sure I understand this. Does the top of each cabinet rest on these angled brackets? Would have to go to Ikea and see how these cabinets are made (especially the back and the inside).

If so, it seems like the perfect media storage cabinet.
What are the internal dimensions of the drawers? (I have only been able to find the external dimensions.)

ReplyDeleteI know this is ancient, but in case anyone finds this ages later (like I did!) it does hold DVDs spine up. I use a Stolmen double drawer with cabinet legs to raise it up. I have little book ends inside to hold up the DVDs. There is about an inch and a half clearance with the DVDs. The drawer slides are heavy duty, so you can't have too many dvds. I do suggest a top, whether countertop or glass, not only to cover the holes, but to distribute the weight of a TV and keep the top of the cabinet from bending over time in the center.
