2. stow a media player like how rick johnson did it 
"i have a computer that i was using for a media player and it looked really dumb beside the tv. i decided to stuff the computer into the footstool. now the computer doesn't look totally out of place in the room and a dvd drive in the side of the footstool is a good conversation starter.
the footstool in the first pic is too ridiculously AWESOME!
ReplyDeletethat is something i could totally do (as opposed to all the hacks that require use of power tools which i am clueless about) and as soon as i get around to redecorating my room, a reupholstered footstool is so on top of my list!

The hard drive will die. The vibrations of the cdplayer will affect to it, I recommend you to place HD in other way.

ReplyDeleteOne question: Do you think there's a possibility in adding a fixed mount for the hard drive? That's the heart of the media center- and spinning on its own like that isn't good for it in the long run!
That looks real good! Do you mount the motherboard directly on a wooden wooden plate in there, or how did you do it? Doesn't it get a little to warm though? Or did you put in ventilation of any sort?

I'll comment on the media player footstool since I built it. :)
ReplyDeleteThe media player is using Geexbox which is a linux based setup that fits in about 3MB. I use it to stream content via UPNP from a Mac. No media is stored on the footstool. (there's a funny sentence)
I'm not worried about the hard drive dying. First, it's a 10GB hard drive that's at least 5 years old and it's ok if it dies. Second, it boots in about 30 seconds and then 5 minutes later the HD spins down. I rarely even use the DVD drive so it doesn't run much either.
Yes, you could add a mount for the HD.
The mobo is mounted on rubber standoffs to the inside of the footstool. It doesn't get very hot since the entire bottom of the footstool is open and it's a 1GHZ pentium.
